Hard mode is pre-2000? Anon, they made better picks back then.
Casablanca
Bridge on the River Kwai
Lawrence of Arabia
Patton
Deer Hunter
Amadeus
Platoon
Silence of the Lambs
Unforgiven

Yes yes you said the same thing yesterday, it's truly hilarious, you should consider being a writer.

Casablanca kinda doesn't count, it was pushed forward a year cos of the war (released in 1942 but won in 1944), and had very little competition as a result.
Bridge should have lost to 12 Angry Men (and maybe Witness for the Prosecution)
Lawrence is overrated, should have lost to To Kill a Mockingbird or (imo) Whatever Happened to Baby Jane (which wasn't even nominated ffs)
Patton, damn that was a weak year, without digging deeper to see releases from early '71 you might have a winner there
Deer Hunter is massively overrated, should have lost to Midnight Express or Boys from Brazil (not nominated)
Amadeus was another weak year, but also the year Once Upon a Time in America was famously given zero nominations for anything, due in part to the butchered cut, but nevertheless it should have swept, absolutely mogs Amadeus
Platoon is a really tough one - it's a good winner in a year that had arguably better movies, just the kind that Oscars hate, like Aliens. Tough call.
Silence of the Lambs is another tough call, a good choice sure but strong competition - JFK, T2, Cape Fear to name but a few.
Unforgiven is good, but overrated. Would have given it to Scent of a Woman.

Why would that be hard mode? They didn't have DEI requirements back then like they do now. Hard mode would be post 2013 or something.

That said 2024 they picked the correct film to win best picture (Oppenheimer). Despite the film having an all white cast and the Academy having DEI requirements, it still won best picture because of behind the scenes box checking. They got around this by hiring interns from different ethnicities/minorities and dumb shit like that, which proves how fucking stupid the DEI requirements are.

I think OP fucked up and meant to say "nothing pre-2000"
>>
>>219113509
Only seen that once but I don't think it's reputation is any way comparable to what's considered the first real modern classic
>>

You think reputation is what matters?
Godfather is fucking overrated anyway, would have been mogged in years around it, got lucky with a really weak year.
