I still don’t get the scam he was pulling with GMAC. He submitted phony sales using illegible / bogus VINs and they’d just send his dealership the cash? How would it even work? Wouldn’t the financial officer over at GM have to verify the VIN for payment to be issued? Like, I know they were blowing his phone up later in the movie but how did it work even once?
>>

Let's explore the description Claude gave:

Jerry Lundegaard's scheme in Fargo (1996) is a desperate, convoluted fraud with several moving parts:
The Core Plan
Jerry, a car dealership manager in Minneapolis, is in serious financial trouble. He arranges for two criminals (Carl and Gaear) to kidnap his own wife, Jean, so that her wealthy father, Wade Earley, will pay a ransom. Jerry intends to pocket the ransom money himself.
The Ransom Inflation
Jerry tells the kidnappers the ransom will be $80,000, which they'll split with him. But he actually plans to extort $1 million from Wade, keeping the $920,000 difference for himself. He's essentially running a scheme against both his father-in-law and the kidnappers simultaneously.
The GMAC Fraud (Running in Parallel)
Separately, Jerry has already been running a fraud at the dealership — he's been submitting loan applications to GMAC (an auto financing company) for cars that don't exist, pocketing the loan money. This is why he's in financial trouble to begin with; the fraud is about to be discovered, and he desperately needs cash to cover it.
Why It All Falls Apart
The plan unravels almost immediately because:

Wade wants to deliver the ransom himself, cutting Jerry out
The kidnappers are dangerously incompetent and violent, killing several people
Jerry is a fundamentally weak, bumbling person who can't control any of the chaos he's set in motion

The dark irony of the film is that Jerry's father-in-law was actually willing to give Jerry a legitimate business loan — the whole catastrophe was essentially unnecessary.
>>
>>219139540
the fuck? the shriner kid grew up?
>>
>>219146295
>>219146486
It was based on this guy:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_McNamara_(fraudster)
Obviously Jerry wasn’t nearly as successful McNamara but I guess you didn’t have to be a rocket scientist to defraud GMAC back then.
>>
>>219137379
>god i love that character so much

He's so terrible at pulling off his plan as well. His mistake was bringing in these two shifty idiot criminals when he could have done a better job pulling it off himself.
>>
>>219146885
got shep'd
>>
>>219146486
>The dark irony of the film is that Jerry's father-in-law was actually willing to give Jerry a legitimate business loan — the whole catastrophe was essentially unnecessary.

it doesn't look like it. The father in law hates him, thinks he's pathetic and would probably use it as a good time for his daughter to divorce him and let him fester in his own failures. He can use the money to find a better husband for his daughter.
>>
>>219146831
The guy defrauds $6 billion dollars and serves no jail time for providing evidence that he bribed officials who were also acquitted in the bribery? What the fuck?
>>
>>219146885
>We’re not a bank, Jerry.
Wade was going to take Jerry’s idea to fund the car park and throw him a pittance (like five or ten grand) as a finder’s fee.
>>
>>219146486
>The dark irony of the film is that Jerry's father-in-law was actually willing to give Jerry a legitimate business loan

That's not true.
His father in law flat out told him that he wasn't gonna give him anything other than a finder's fee and that they'll move in on the deal without his input
>>
>>219147095
Yah well, it’s just a bit of money, dontcha know.

>>
>asking your father-in-law for a loan to cover your failed scamming at his dealership

>>
>>219147036
>>219147161
Retard here, wasn’t Jerry’s deal a scam? That’s why he had to be involved, cause he fronted collateral with fake cars and he was hoping his father in law would bridge it?
>>
>>219137343
His nose is pissing me off. It's really bad. Look at that bridge. Great actor, but it was all I could focus on watching this movie. I didn't have that in his other movies. Maybe the beard helped.
>>
>>219147215
The car lot proposal was legit (a pretty sweet deal) but yes, Jerry was in all likelihood going to take Wade’s loan and either dig himself out of trouble with his GMAC scam or just run off with it into the wild blue yonder.

he was in over his head about to be caught over skimming money from the dealership with the car scam - my assumption was he's a degenerate gambler who blew all his scammed money - so came up with a scheme to get enough money to cover his losses, come out with a bunch more and fuck over his hated father in law

They were high school sweethearts most likely. Norm aged like shit. Painting mallards probably became his career after some kind of nervous breakdown or workplace injury.
>>
>>219137343
I'm from the 90s and I remember this movie being a huge deal, some kind of breakthrough like Pulp Fiction, yet I never saw it.
I remember my mother saying it was gruesome and that it had a woodchipper scene.
So I was watching it yesterday, and it was quite tame, then when they arrive to the cabin with the kidnapped wife, she starts jumping around with a blindfold.
And I thought for sure she will jump headfirst into the woodchipper, and this will ruin the deal. I thought, "Yeah, killing the wife this way is gruesome and of course the movie is famous for it".
Nope, the woodchipper scene is at the end of the movie and honestly pointless.
I was a bit disappointed; the movie isn't bad, but it's no classic. Most of the humor comes from repeating "jeez" and "oh yeah".
I guess I was hoping for more.
Btw the movie it's not even set in Fargo but a town called Brainreid or something and Minneapolis. Very fucking stupid.

why was he so upset about the finder's fee? is it because he'd have to pay that back too which would have been an additional 75k?
>>
>>219148079
You’re a thirty year old who’s somehow disappointed in the audience, the movie, and even partially your mom, because she said she liked the movie once over a decade ago and you took that to mean it must be transcendentally fucked up while being callous enough to get nothing out of a main character being fed into a wood-chipper by a psychopath
>>

>>
>>219148203
he thought he'd get a lot more out of the deal that he could use to pay off his gmac scam. he even debated calling off the kidnapping at the thought
then he finds he's getting a pittance finders fee for what he believed was some big profitable project, cucked yet again by the father in law he hates
>>
>>219148494
but i'm confused at the way he scoffs when wade asks him about what jerry wants for a finder's fee. it's like he never wanted to ask for one to begin with and is mad it's being brought up. he should be happy he's getting more money
>>
>>219148494

>>219148752
he brought back a deal he thinks is worth a fuckton of money (or at a minimum can somehow make him a fuckton of money, you aren't going to be willing to forgo a million dollar ransom for some small project) and is being thrown what amounts to chump change in exchange for his father in law icing him out of it.
>>219148868
that's the gmac scam I mentioned anon
it was why he was so desperate for money he needed like 300k just to cover up his little scam and while we're not told why he clearly had issues causing him money problems that led to the scam in the first place

Is this kind of like the Big Lebowski? Where the exact details of the plot are never completely known or understood because it’s so large and convoluted? And because the characters are so inept?
>>
Shep beating the shit out of Bushcemi and calling him a "a little weasel" always gets me. Fargo is great
>>
>>219151660
A little maybe.
Big Lebowski was a very odd movie and painful to follow. The constant "Shut the fuck up, Donnie' by one of the main characters was too much for me. The "humor" of the movie wasn't my cup of tea.
"Fargo" is a little better to follow but there are some truly fucked up characters. It starts off as an easily doable crime and goes all kinds of sideways by the end of the movie.
>>
>>219151660
it's more that the coen brothers deliberately leave it extremely vague exactly why he's engaging in all these schemes beyond the fact he needs the money for some reason. it's open to viewer interpretation exactly what his motives are. the wider plot isn't really that hard to follow

He thought they were going to give him $700k to buy the lot instead of $70k. As Wade says Jerry somehow expects his father in law is going to give him all that money so Jerry can collect on it when it pays off. Makes zero sense for them which is why they assumed Jerry was bringing them a business opportunity for them, not for him.
>>
>>219149066
I assumed his fraudulently procured loan from GMAC was in an attempt to buy the lot, or at least put a down payment on it. Wade giving him $700k means he can simply pay back the loan, avoid fraud charges and buy the lot he intends to use to make him financially secure.
