Its treated as them being just another lame group of imperial remnants causing trouble.And then, suddenly, the capital of the New Republic gets vaporized by Starkiller Base, and the status quo of the show gets thrown in chaos as the entire galaxy starts falling apart in the wake of the calamity.Basically just focus this new show on establishing what the ACTUAL sequel era looks like, exclusively from the perspective of people who don't even know that Rey exists and only know about Kylo Ren because he took credit for the terrorist attack that wiped out a whole star system. The events of the movies influence the ongoing story in this new show, but we never direct connect with them. Beyond the destruction of the New Republic capital (which we actually SEE before it gets blown up in this show) the events of the movies are treated mostly as a regional conflict that no one else is following that closely because everyone else has their own problems.By the end of this first show, you should have more than enough material to do further spinoffs of build off of, and from there you can start to connect dots back to characters like Rey if you want.
