Why did big time Mob shows and movies die off?
Popularity of that stuff waned, same as other genres. There was also a time through the 80s and 90s where legal drama shows like LA Law and Boston Legal or big movies like The Firm were everywhere and that all ended too.

There should be more stuff like zero zero zero about south american cartels and the italian mafia. the ndrangheta has reached heights the cosa nostra could only dream of, they're making insane money and are responsible for the vast majority of coke that comes into europe and most europeans have never heard of them. There are also multi-national cartels like the kinehans that could serve as inspiration. The sopranos is unique in mob media cause it had so many other aspects to it that made it great other than just seeing behind the curtain of a criminal enterprise. The rest of mob media hasn't had that but if the narrative itself is as interesting as it can be if the scope of the criminal organization is a lot bigger it won't have to.
