I believe that Rowling has stated canonically that modern weapons would BTFO wizards, if they ever got into a real war. But I think she was imagining full on military shit, like hypersonic stealth jets, nukes, gattlings, shit like that. Wizards could probably very easily come up with a number of spells to protect against personal weapons.
