Redpill me about UPN. Why did it fail?
>>
>>219186923
It didn't play Home Improvement enough.
>>
Homeboys in Outer Space was better Trek than nu-Trek

>>
Didn’t give Home Movies the chance it deserved.

A show about space normies doing the futuristic version of minimum wagie work and the shit they have to deal with is unironically an interesting concept that I wish we saw more of
>>
Because they canceled Shasta McNasty
>>
>>219186923
It just turned into the CW.
>>
if Clerks TAS would have been on UPN instead of ABC, they could have paired it with the Dilbert cartoon and gotten some synergy going
they both would have run at least a little longer

Futurama was about a delivery company

Back in the 90s we used to joke that UPN stands for Under Paid Niggers.

Competed with five other major networks that all had a smattering of hit shows, three of which (CBS, NBC, ABC) were practically legacy networks with history behind them

The few good shows (Dilbert, Home Movies) got short runs, giving the network a band rep as a place that cancels good shows

And yeah, too nog focused. How do expect to build a network that caters to 12% of the population, and it's ghetto nog shit to boot?

I remember Mad TV made the same joke.

UPN was Paramount's attempt at a new network after the success of Fox. It launched around the same time as The WB, Warner Bros' attempt at a new broadcast network. Neither had enough juice to become the 5th major network.

Eventually Paramount and CBS got back together, so UPN wasn't really needed, and UPN and the WB merged to form The CW, which provided cult kino for teens. The CW was joint owned between Paramount and Warner Bros, but is now independent.

Reddit does that because it’s full of midwits who think pointing out the most surface-level overlap is a slam dunk rebuttal.

“uhh actually Futurama was about deliveries ”

Yeah and The Sopranos is about waste management. You can reduce anything to its setting if you’re socially stunted enough. The other guy’s point was about blue-collar-in-space being the *focus*, not just the backdrop for high-concept sci‑fi.

This is why UPN failed btw. They were aiming at niche angles before audiences were trained to basedface over “mundane but in space.” If Homeboys in Outer Space dropped on streaming today Reddit would call it underrated gem kino and write essays about proletariat Afrofuturism or some shit.
