Every Todd Solondz movie makes me feel like I need a shower afterwards. The guy seems obsessed with putting sexualized kids and pedophilia into his "deep" indie films. In Welcome to the Dollhouse he sexualizes the awkward 12-year-old Dawn and throws in a subplot where her little sister gets kidnapped by a pedophile. The camera lingers on the kids in a way that feels way too creepy.Happiness is even worse. Dylan Baker plays a suburban dad who drugs and rapes his son's 11 year old friend at a sleepover, then does it again to another kid. He has a calm talk with his own son admitting how much he enjoyed molesting boys. Solondz somehow makes the pedophile one of the most sympathetic characters while the whole movie swims in perversion.Storytelling still has that same sleazy vibe with awkward sexual power dynamics and humiliation where Selma Blair gets fucked by the guy who played Bunny Colvin in the Wire. Is this guy actually just a pervert getting funding for his fetishes by calling it "dark comedy"? Or are people really pretending this is brave art?https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iLCZbtjMvHA
I didn't read all that but I love Welcome To The Dollhouse and could rewatch it any time. Happiness is something I don't think I could sit through again though. Not saying it's a bad movie, but it was too much for me
