there's probably a more emotionally affecting version of the story in there where you feel the vastness of space and the desperation of humanity a bit more. but it doesn't get realized because Andy Weir can't into tone.

100% sure when the astrophage issue was resolved, humans would immediately weaponize it instead of converting it into free clean energy for all and living happily ever after.

I never read much fiction. Is most of it this bad? I know a little Shakespeare, and it's obviously 100s of times better. People really read this for fun and think "This is good/cool"? wow. Well most tv is shit too I guess.

>>

It’s Bing Bong Theorem levels of HECKIN EPIC REFERENCE. Very, very Reddit. It reads like an interaction you’d get from Abed from Community, which works in a TV show about a caricature autist nerd, but doesn’t make for compelling narration in a book. It also completely interrupts the flow of the prose and feels like an author trying to interject their pointless geek trivia into a book to show off their epic knowledge.

Have you ever noticed that when people talk about movies these days, it often declines into a pissing contest to see who has memorised the most needless trivia and that is then passed off socially as “Film Knowledge”? It’s basically that. People who thought Kevin Smith’s self-insert LotR vs Star Wars scene in Clerks was something to aspire to.

>Have you ever noticed that when people talk about movies these days
I've never heard much interesting film commentary IRL, not that I'm hanging out with film experts, but I'm talking about reasonably intelligent people, 1-2 of whom are kind of "film nerds," but of course can't make interesting commentary like me :) I wouldn't expect the average person to say anything more than what a caricature on tv does. People rarely have anything interesting to say about any topic really.

>>219202528
For all the Sci fi references which drag it down, and the main characters which are reddit personified, Andy Weir is good at making an interesting plot and injecting real engineering and science into it. Project Hail Mary has a cool lore dump of the alien's biology and how it works on a planet with no light and massive gravity.
The Martian is basically a novel of science experiments woven into a coherent plot.
So he's not totally shit, he's just has to be a cringe nerd.

Artemis wasn't so bad for that as the main character is a Muslim girl, but it appears in other characters
>>
>>219199992
It's a kids movie, so I'll give it a pass. I was bored to tears through most of it though

I see, makes sense. I read those highlighted passages and thought "I could do this..." It's not rocket science. Good luck getting paid for a script though. I bet a few /tv/tards have written some (maybe painfully bad) scripts.
>>
>>219202528
Fiction has gone through a more disastrous decline than hollywood and TV since 2000. It's all feminised and preachy now. Andy Weir is a actually exception as being a newish male sci-fi writer to make it big with a "I freakin' love science" motif rather than some gender/class struggle with a gay romance sub plot.
>>
>>219203354
Andy Weir manchild media still has an audience. Look at Ready Player one or the Bobiverse.
