So I just finished up a first time watch of The Sopranos last weekend, and it was incredible. Family and friends have told me I should watch The Wire, and that it is just as good as The Sopranos though different in tone.

I watched the first episode, and it seemed so corny to me and without the self-aware humor The Sopranos has. Does it get better?

Yeah you're witnessing kino but your brain can't register it yet. 3 years from now when you rewatch it you'll realize I was right.

Anyway it does get better, it sort of starts in the middle of everything and throws a lot of things at you, and some of the niggertalk can cause you to miss stuff, but it does get much better. Also not being as good as Sopranos isn't really saying much, The Sopranos is better than most stuff out there.

It's better. The wire has one meh season, whereas the sopranos entire final two seasons are "oh shit what else we got??".

I'll never not laugh my ass off at tony randomly becoming a psycho halfway through the final season because they needed to wrap it up, do he suddenly freaked out over money issues that were introduced in the very same episode. Peak writing right there.

The Wire is Seinfeld and Sopranos is Friends. Sopranos is for stupid people.

if you want a wire thread just ask no need to troll and act dumb

They're very different shows. The Wire is more about people on a macro level and does take a little longer to "hook" the viewer but as a whole I think it's a stronger series.

Sopranos has a better theme song though.

this is a very different tone, there is humor but not like Sopranos. The Wire, you gotta watch it and pay attention. Give it until the end of the first season to see if it grows on you.

Wire is better, yes. More dense, more complex. Sopranos is great as well, the Wire is just on a different tier.

I found it helpful, especially in the first season, to put the subtitles on. A lot of the jungle jibber-jabber can be hard to make out, meaning that you’ll miss important plot points.

First season feels like another cop show but it ramps up quickly.

I'm 2 seasons in. I was skeptical at first, but man it really is so good. I have a soft spot for The Sopranos as I watched it first and when I was a teenager and it was the best thing I'd ever seen. But The Wire is probably just as good, in a different way. The Sopranos is primarily a character study mostly about relationships, where The Wire is about systems and procedures. Maybe that's why people are saying you have to really pay attention: because each scene is relevant and has an effect on what happens next, leading up to the conclusion. I think The Sopranos is more a family drama, and in a way it's more about feelings and irrational behavior, where everything in The Wire feels coldly logical. The police are doing their jobs, the criminals are doing theirs, both sides make stupid, fatal mistakes at times, but it's completely logically driven by the types of people they are. The ending of the seasons (I've only seen the first two so far) feel inevitable but tragic.
