almost cried
kinda boring movie though innit?
>>219203706what the fuck kind of dad kills himself with a daughter that young
WHY CAN'T WE GIVE LOVE ONE MORE CHANCE
>>219203724damn i really liked it and rewatching it after seeing it once you can actually catch a lot more things like that scene where he spits at his mirror because of how much he hates himself and just other moments where you can see his depressionpaul shouldve won an oscar for this over brendan fraser icl
>>219203768this movie permanently changed under pressure for me
>>219203756one who has seen the future
>>219203724Yeah. The structure doesn't work. I can't be fucked to watch gonzo-esque father & daughter holiday scenes only because them being taped and now watched by a character in the movie signifies they probably have greater meaning.
>>219203756well the way i saw it was he was obviously insanely depressed and he knew that the girl would be provided for by her mom and he just knew that he couldnt live with himself any longer so he just took one last trip with her and recorded everything so she would atleast be able to cherish her memories with him
>found footage mystery box except the mystery is depression and suicide I clapped.
>>219203897wtf do you people unironically hate aftersun, this movie was genuinely one of the best movies of that year (2022) for me, maybe the best too
>>219203959I didn't even finish it. Obviously Mescal and the girl are great actors, but it's technically unimpressive, structurally blunt, and emotionally manipulative.
>>219204013>emotionally manipulative.what?
>>219203862>he knew that the girl would be provided for by her momwhat kind of bullshit that is. how does that justify the pain inflicted.i can't think of anything more low than a parent checking out on a young kid
>>219204066There's almost no way you can make something about depression and suicide and leaving behind a kid daughter without it inevitably invoking strong feelings. It's a cheat code.>>219204092You think that's why the director became a lesbian?
>>219204117so according to you movies on sad topics just shouldnt be made? wouldnt this be true for everything tho like feeling happy after watching a feel good movie or feeling hyped after watching some action flick>>219204092he was just insanely depressed thats just how actual non internet depression works like obviously it was wrong of him to leave the kid behind but im just saying that he wouldnt have done it if the kid didnt have a mom
>>219203706I liked it, but I guess im a retard, I didnt get that the ending apparently means he offed himself ?!?
>>219204182that was the ending like him closing the camcorder and walking off after dropping his daughter signified this and the whole rave scene between the dad and his daughter at the end too with sophie trying to catch callum but him falling from her grasp
>>219204182nobody did anon it's just the director's dad and it's a real story i got that from reading wikipedia after watching the movie
>>219203756such a non-existentialism post
>>219204162The problem is that Aftersun has very little else going for it. It creates a mystery box asking the viewer to trust it to resolve in a meaningful way, and then it vaguely tells you the father killed himself and the girl became a lesbian. That's cheap as shit. I'm sure the director doing a a therapy session is big with the r/ihaveveryhighempathy crowd, but what is actually achieved?
>>219204239its not a real story the directors dad didnt kill himself and he died when she was 16 compared to the movie where callum killed himself when the girl was 11the trip to turkey was semi inspired by real trips tho
>>219204277>compared to the movie where callum killed himselfWHERE
>>219203706Cried because that shit is so fucking evil?
>>219203706Because of how agonizingly boring it was?
i thought it was about the evils of divorce?i guess divorce is just too common now to make a woe is me statement out of it
>>219204092It's better than abusing and neglecting your child. And the alternative of flat-out tossing them onto the curbside like trash.
>>219204253>it vaguely tells you the father killed himselfhow is it vague, the entire movie is basically spoonfeeding you the fact that the dad is insanely depressed and showing you multiple incidents related to this callum walking alone into the dark sea him crying alone multiple timeshim spitting on the mirror the entire ending rave sequence makes it explicitly clear that the dad killed himself and also the girl being a lesbian has no correlation with the dad at all and shes not even a lesbian shes bi she literally kisses a boy in the movie>but what is actually achieved?what do you mean bruh its a movie
>>219204291the entire ending scene bruh did you want the director to explicitly show callum shooting himself or something
>>219204366yeah?
>>219204338>shes not even a lesbian shes bithat's every lesbian
The superior brit vacation depressing movie with Sun in the title
>>219204338I'm not saying it doesn't tell you, I'm saying it doesn't tell you explicitly. The implicitness may make it seem more tasteful, but it's hackery in itself. >brooding dark mystery box>strong implication he killed himself Do you feel as though you learned something about male suffering? Or fatherhood? Or how children suffer under their inept parents? What did the movie do and was it worth it?
>>219203706Its kino
>>219204388TRVKE
>>219203706why was she gay though
>>219204446I mean first of all its a movie so its primary purpose is to entertain me which it did, I dont go in expecting to learn something from a moviebut yeah I did learn how people with severe depression might act both in public and private before they kill themselves
>>219204488she literally kissed a boy in the movie and she was gay at the end because its partly inspired by the directors life and the director is lesbian irl too
>>219204338desu stop replying to him he's just an autistic anon who hates the movie and shits up every thread about it
>>219204498Entertain isn't a good word, though, is it? It's non-specific regarding what faculties it engages. A movie doesn't have to be informative in a textbook way, but it should provide insight, ideally in an immersive way. I guess this one does that, but only if you allow it to draw you in in spite of its lack of magnetism and end up interpreting the ending properly. Whether the insight and feelings invoked justify sitting through its runtime + afterthought, I don't think I'd say they do.
chances women would pay attention to this movie if it wasnt for mescal?
>>219204753I don’t think you need to be drunk to enjoy it
>>219204753this is not that type of movie bro
dare I say it, kino?
>>219204753very very lowwomen are more concerned with physicality than men despite the contrary being popular belief
>>219204488>Director (lesbian) tells the audience that people become gay because of childhood traumaholy kino
>>219204498You should kill yourself
This movie is pure existentialist depression kino and it reminded me to call my mom and tell her that I love her. Cherish your parents, anons.
>>219205448damn this is why i liked this movie so much, its just this and manchester by the sea for me
>>219203774>on subsequent viewings you can get even more boredWhoa
