>even though he failed at literally everything he desired, was decently happy at the start of the movies this is somehow a happy endingwhy does every fucking thing i read about this movie repeat this? this is one of the most miserable endings ive ever seen
It's one of the most miserable movies I've ever seen. I'm convinced you have to be British to understand the humor because nothing about it was funny.
it is not a happy ending, unless you're talking about the infamous "Love Conquers All" cut that the studios wanted because it was too miserable for the retarded american audience
>>219206967You think he was happy at the start of the movie?
>>219207458Terry Gilliam is American.
>>219206967>this is somehow a happy endingI have never heard anyone say this once.
>>219207595Technically.
>>219206967>this is somehow a happy endingNo it wasn't. What the fuck are you talking about?
>>219206967fyi
>>219207701There were 2 endings. The actual ending and the "happy ending" the US theatrical release had because the studio thought the actual ending was too depressing. The movie still failed in the US.
What are some other miserable endings?Chinatown
>>219206967Nobody thinks that film has a happy ending
>>219207701>>219207609the main writers said one of his goals was to create a movie where the protagonist going mad was ideal, and everything ive read from other writers unironically states this the happy ending (the original one wher ehe goes crazy). i find these people are stupid
>>219207871Classic American audience.
>>219208187it's happy in the sense that shit could be worse basically. given the circumstances. obviously not a happy ending like click or some bullshit
>>219206967>this is one of the most miserable endings ive ever seenWhat do you mean? He won.
>>219208187after second thoughts ive learned that its probably best im my view to view the film a sort of rejection of escapism and ernst Junger's inner freedom concept.sam tried to live both free and within the system, his fantasies of a more energetic life took hold and it was one slip up too many, hell even if he made just one it probably wouldve gotten him killed anyway. one can try to not let the dicator shape your inner world, as Junger thought, but then your always living percariously and it only takes one slip.the only really happy people in this film was Tuttle, who decides to rebel against the system. while his plumping probably wont cause a revolution, if hes ever caught and killed, then he woudlnt regret how he lived like sam.
>>219209871see >>219209887. if by won, you mean he walked a tightrope of dream and reality and ended up falling falling into the latter while destroying the latter as opposed to trying to merge the two like what was his goal. all you need to refute the idea this is a happy ending is the fact he got the woman he did all of this fore killed
