the special edition VHS came in a gilded gold looking box set with I think Yoda prominent on the outside, the non-special edition came in that black with blue and Vader motif. My uncle gave me that version while he kept the special editions version.

My parents have that same set. Is there not a digital version of this version online somewhere, even just a VHS rip?
