I bought the Studio Canal "Classics Remastered" Blu-Ray of this when it released in 2021 and that looked very good.

Anyone seen 4k of this? I'm thinking of acquiring a physical of it.

What are you talking about? It's very colourful and pretty the whole film. Unless you mean "dim" as in boring, in which case you couldn't be more wrong as there's nothing more exciting than Shakespeare.

HDR conversion issue? I remember thinking the opening scene looked darker than it should on the 4k release but it was fine after that.

its clearly "dim" as in transferred from degraded film stock. the dvd was just shit so even this is an improvement.

Ran began in the best mood possible amid high expectations. As soon as it began, however, I cocked my head. The opening was a short scene of beaters hunting down a wild boar; a feast at the end of the hunt followed. I thought it would be a scene of them roasting the various game they’d caught, a gorgeous, free and easy gathering fueled with sake, but it wasn’t. Rather, their clothes tidy, with the grace and poise of Noh performers everyone piously lent their ears to the words of the feudal lord (King Lear). All too explicitly, formalist beauty was taking priority over cinema’s own realist visual aesthetic. I felt a strange discomfort, and amidst my slowly mounting anxiety that this film wasn’t going to be fun, the story began in earnest.
Visually, Tatsuya Nakadai’s King Lear is sharp and leaves a strong impression. His speech and action are crisp. But because the all-important point, how he’s perceiving things, isn’t as clear as it should be, there’s an overbearing sense that the story is being foisted or forced on you—it feels strangely phony. I already wanted to leave. Coming in, however, I’d seen and greeted many people in the lobby and the main hall. Herald people, Toho people, many friends and critics … Standing up and leaving the theater would be the shameless act of a heretic, simply off limits.
My gaze began to drift from the screen to fall on the backs of the audience. My seat was a little behind the center so I could see the viewers in front of me well. People’s response to Ran was clear to me then and there, to a painful degree. They were clearly perplexed. They were still giving the screen their full attention but didn’t seem to know how to view this film. I crossed my arms. It was just as Master Oguni had fumed. The characterization was lacking at the script level; it was a clear mistake in the screenplay.

The issue is HDR. If you have an HDR screen it looks even more vibrant, but if you view it without one it looks dim
