How did people react to this back when it first aired?
>>219210425Bored out of my mind. Realized that it's a badly written show solely enjoyed by retards.
>>219210425everyone thought HBO glitched out
>>219210497this. i got up and checked my cable box in a frenzy but then the credits rolled.i guess people have been posting that on HBO max now the credits roll immediately after the cut to black instead of the long pause? i should see if it's true but the huge pause really made it
>>219210425People were seething and considered a cop out. It was considered a terrible ending at the time. Only recently have opinions changed on it
>>219210425Even though I was only in my early teens I watched Sopranos with my dad and he got upset and thought something went wrong with the TV when it happened but I swear I understood that it meant Tony was killed just based on the language of the scene. I remember specifically asking aloud "So he's dead?"
>>219210425Me own fockin soprano?
>>219211665fpbp>>219211671spbp
>>219211671Watching it back and the way it was filmed makes it obvious to me now. Every time the door rings it shows Tony look up and then it cuts to his POV of whoever is coming in. The final shot is supposed to be his POV of seeing Meadow but instead we are just left with darkness
>>219212683It's actually so smart. The whole show. It's dogshit on purpose.
>>219210425I stood up, clapped, and shouted KIIIIIINOOOOOOOOOOOOOO like Darth Vader looool.
Honestly miss the sense of community there was back then around watching shows when it aired once a week and everyone was on the same episode. I still remember the night when Richie Aprile was shot and you could hear people cheering up and down the street. Even Lost posting on /tv/ was probably the best this board ever was.
>>219210497The reaction was this >>219210497 at first, everyone thought that their cable messed up. Once it was established that it was real, it was this >>219211665
>>219210425>>21921042>>219212683The Sopranos having a week between episodes gave people the chance to analyze everything that was happening. Only extremely low IQ retards thought that Tony didn't die, or that something went wrong with their tv
>you are breaking my bawls over here!!>over my dead muddah!I never got the appeal of this show, I thought it was going to be some badass mafia show but that's like only 1% of it, the rest is just mundane suburban drama
You dont even hear it when it happens. Very allegorical.
The only thing that pissed me off about the ending is that the wife and kid also get wacked (ok I kind of understand carmela but still). they didn't deserve it, tony did
>>219214106Nobody assumes that either of them got killed. Zero reason to wack family members unless they tried to intervene
>>219210425It broke their little boomer and Gen X brains
>>219214106Everyone knows this but the suicide bomber flattening the whole place was a bit much.
>>219212683exactly. Not rocket surgery.
David Chase was originally going to end the series with Tony driving into a tunnel on his way to a sit down with New York. It would have had the same cut to black moment, implying he never made it home. He became obsessed with the idea but the series continued on and he decided to use the cut to black in a different context
>>219214635I think doing it with his family was a stronger narrative choice
I thought the conversation with Bobby and Tony was pretty blatant foreshadowing and that’s what the ending referred to. I’m surprised there was ever so much discussion over whether he died or not.
It's like Candlejack.Sopranos sopranos sopr
The actual real reason it was left open-ended was incase they made another season or a movie sequel. Chase was keen on the movie idea but those plans obviously died with Gandolfini so instead of a sequel he made that bbc cuckolding prequel
>>219210425>boomers thought their service cut out and called the cable company
>>219214778The ENTIRE last season, EVERY single episode foreshadowed Tony's death. Even the epic titles themselves. Entire conversations, Tony telling Eugene there's only way out of the mob life, to die.Even Bobby does his first and only hit of the series in the last season, then he dies, his fate was sealed. Every episode has something in it
>>219214944What a random screenshot lol
>>219214106It’s a mob thing you don’t touch family. So you’re wrong.
>>219211665In all liklihood, given what I've gleaned about the show in numerous rewatched, it seems just as probable that there was some fuck up (i.e ran out of time at location or editing issues with no time for reshoots) and they just aired it anyway knowing it was over They were all definitely tired of being involved in the show at that point. Must have felt like goddamned grand central station
>>219214944I mean it’s literally even spelled out in the first episode. Doesnt he tell Melfi there’s only two ways out: death or the can? Then I think his panic attacks revolved around his sense of impending doom. It’s kind of obvious the show was always going to end with him being whacked.
I wish John Sacrimoni was my dad
>>219210425Sopranos was great. Everyone wanted to be like Tony Soprano and bang Meadow at the same time. Sopranos and The Wire are two of the best HBO series of all time. There were no series in the 80's that even came close. This was peak HBO and life.
Tony said it himself, either he dies or ends up in the can. If he doesn’t die, Carlo would have testified and sent his ass to prison for years
>>219214106Families don't get touched
>>219214778Was there any other foreshadowing in S6? I can't recall right now.>I’m surprised there was ever so much discussion over whether he diedpeople aren't very smart -- of course there'd be confusion and discord etc.
only actual pseuds think tony died lmfao
The final moment aside, I thought the build up of tension during that last episode was great. I watched it for the first time recently. I didn't know what was going to happen (although I suspected Tony was going to die I had no idea how/when). The way the final scenes are filmed, especially with Meadow trying to park, constant cutting back to Tony, it made you crazy with anticipation and tension.
>>219210425It’s the perfect ending. The entire show, and the way of the mafia, is about leaving things unsaid and filling in the blanks. Look at the phone call where Carmine Sr. asks Tony to whack Johnny Sack without ever coming close to saying it.Imagine if you were talking to a real mafioso and you asked about Tony Soprano and the guy said “The screen went black on him.” You’d know exactly what he was saying.
>>219215726>Was there any other foreshadowing in S6? I can't recall right now.YesSee>>219214944
>>219210425Genuinely thought my ISDN spazzed out while watching the hbo divx stream.
>>219213813The other theory is that it speaks to how Tony will never be able to relax or enjoy anything, he'll be looking over his shoulder for the rest of his life and living in constant anxiety.
>>219216263Except Tony has been living like this since the first fucking episode. The FBI knows about him and he’s worried that he could lose it all at any moment hence the panic attacks. Multiple hits have been put on him as well prior to the final episodes in earlier seasons. It’s a dumb theory
>>219216395>>219216263Also Butchie never rescinds the hit that's out on Tony when they have their last meeting. It's still on when he leaves. Plus other shit like Tony is always dressed in black in the final episodes, all colors are subdued and the opening frame of the first shot of the last episode is Tony laying as if he's in a coffin
>>219210425
>>219216623Is that Artie? What happened?
>>219216637he started going down hill after 9/11
