Why hasn't it been properly adapted?

The source material is shallow, mundane garbage.
>>
Because it's the most boring thing I've ever read. Hot garbage.
Only Catcher in the Rye beats it.
The only 2 books I would ever burn.

The Great Gatsby is great because of its prose. In terms of content it's just niche Jazz age wankery. Unless you were a wealthy New York socialite in 1925, the contents of the book are almost entirely unrelatable.

the 2013 version is essentially a page for page remake. it's heavily stylized, which you might disagree with, but i think it's oddly fitting. (yes, even the rap music)

I remember watching it on LSD and it was fucking mesmerizing

it's effectively a one-act play. not enough plot for a movie.

plus everything interesting that Gatsby does is in the backstory and modern audiences have no context for what a "bootlegger" is or how they should feel about a successful one.

This.
There's literal music in Fitzgerald's words and style of writing. Its really thick and dense language, though. You have to take a few seconds to process what's being said.
