>>219226607Your hypothesis though seems to imply that, if you built an entirely new Gondor for them, their behavior patterns would change. Not wanting to get hurt by someone stronger is basic survival, fighting over scraps is also basic survival. You could, possibly, change Orcs back, through years and years of nurture over nature, and even that has no guarantee of actually working, if the Orc simply sees you as weak and vulnerable, and if it can take, instead of learn to support itself. There is no guarantee that there is a renaissance waiting for Orc society, just because Sauron died. Rather, the next Orc will take charge, and do the same things, until it gets weak and old, and get killed by the one that will substitute him. The best thing you can do, is kill as many Orcs as you can, before they kill you. It may not be strictly good as an approach, but it is definitely better than the alternative of the Orcs killing everyone.

Orcs fundamentally lack something that other races have. If they had better impulse control and pattern recognition they’d form communities and hierarchal structures to govern them for a better allocation of resources. They simply cannot do this. If they could do it Saruman wouldn’t need his Australian bodybuilders.

Their problem is not that they don’t have capacity to change, it’s that they’ve been so scarred and deformed by malice that any attempt to break the mold would result in the “weaker” orc being brow beaten back into compliance, crabs in a bucket style. To change would require a leader to emerge to put those energies to something productive instead.

I don’t think it’s ever stated, but I’ve always imagined that at least *some* Elves joined Morgoth willingly, just like some Maiar did and became Balrogs. Another thing to bear in mind is that Elves aren’t just better than humans; they’re also vastly different and with a different fate. Unlike mortal men, they can choose to “let go” of a body at any time and eventually reincarnate. The Elves that became the first Orcs didn’t do that for some reason, and I have a feeling that played a role in their eventual (and total) corruption.
