A "reddit movie" is basically any film that a certain type of guy discovers and immediately feels like he's found a hidden gem that nobody else knows about, even though millions of people have seen it. Think stuff like Fight Club, Interstellar, The Big Lebowski, or anything by Christopher Nolan. These movies usually have some kind of twist or "deep" philosophical undertone that makes the viewer feel smart for watching it, and they tend to attract people who want to explain the ending to you even when you didn't ask. There's a heavy overlap with movies that have a male protagonist who is misunderstood by society or operates outside of normal social rules, which a certain demographic finds very relatable for some reason.The other hallmark is that these movies get quoted and referenced constantly to the point where it becomes kind of insufferable. Like if you mention Fight Club online someone will inevitably start reciting the rules or talk about how the twist changed their life at age 15. Reddit movies also tend to get a very specific kind of defense where if you say you didn't like one, people act like you just didn't understand it rather than considering that maybe you understood it perfectly fine and just weren't that impressed. There's a gatekeeping quality to the whole thing, like enjoying these films is a personality trait rather than just watching a movie on a Friday night.
