Obviously they're shown as being mean or cruel in many scenes, but it's hard to dislike the protagonists of an us-against-the-world story, the camaraderie and struggle is an intrinsically appealing fantasy. Russel Crowe is also way too cool to really dislike, you see his underlings acting like retards a lot but he's this brooding warlord with an iron will to see his mission through. I'm supposed to hold that guy in contempt? No. Fear him, sure, but he's badass. I also noticed it's an incredibly Archetypical story. Maybe the oldest story there is. "A tribe of men are united in their purpose. They are brothers in arms. Then a woman is introduced, and everything goes to shit." Cavemen were telling that story. Hominid apes in a tree were telling that story. We've all LIVED that story. So of course you're going to relate to the protagonists a bit, because it's iterating on something lodged deep in the collective unconscious. Also the soundtrack was very good. "But we actually used progressive bands and made them PRETEND to be racist :) " yeah but the racist songs are super catchy.
