I think Rocky is also Jesus. Grace is the mortal, that cried, and doubted, and worried in Gethsemane, and Rocky is the divine; the sacrifice, the love. The film is a retelling of the passion, with the bits at the start being the biblical story, and everything in space being internal to Jesus as he is crucified and martyred and returning to heaven. The film then ends with him having saved mankind, but remaining in the stars, still the teacher.
