And you know what? The CGI in the retouched versions actually enhances the film, the car chase scene is omegakino.

I love Lucas' Star Wars, but objectively speaking, THX 1138 and American Graffiti are superior works of art. Pretty sure Lucas himself said at some point that for Star Wars he had to lower himself to make it more accessible and mainstream, because he was basically making commercialized fantasy for children.

Looking through that lens, SW was actually an artistic work, a tribute and an exercise in genre savvy by Lucas. But then he stumbled upon toy deals. SW then became ANH and an entire franchise sprang up from what was supposed to be a self-contained one off movie.
