On the flip side, someone who can only direct and not write will still have a better chance than you. Look at Arkasha Stevenson, brought on to direct, for her first movie, a script that had been floating around for years, which turned into the First Omen. She can actually make a movie, so she’s valuable. Being a screenwriter by itself is just not competitive enough. No one cares. There are plenty of scripts. The filmmakers are what matter.At least if you write a good enough book, YOU, as a writer, are the one with value.
