The science in this movie is fucking terriblehe develops a live translation app from alien to English in like a 5 minute montage. And the alien just instinctually understands English without any tools
When the beatles "two of us" started playing there was a perceptabke wave of giddiness flowing through the crowd at my theater. Everyone was bobbing their heads grinning like happy idiots. Total happiness in the world increased.Rare to see such a 100% unified emotional crowd reaction, outside of stuff like cape films (captain america hammer moment etc).

I just realized the biggest plothole in the movie. They find out how to reproduce the things on earth but it makes no sense for them to be born with the energy tanks full, they need to go to the sun to do that.
>>219268647there are self balancing centrifuges, apparently
It was alright but there's a couple things that could've been better>How Grace and Rocky can communicate together so quickly, like the software Grace uses to make Rocky's speech into something coherent should've been introduced a bit more.>The entire grapple plotline seemed... pretty stupid all around. It felt like a major oversight from the earth designers to not include some way to sample something from a long way away in space either, but whatever. But then... why not simply take Rocky's ship to do the complex maneuver? It probably would've tanked the Gs better, and Rocky is a better pilot than Grace. And even if you needed the Hail Mary... why the fuck would you put the grapple somewhere you have to space walk to to retrieve?Knowing the author it's probably explained in the book but it could've been put in the movie. All in all, it was fine, but it's carried by the big spider. I liked the Martian better.
Hi I’m anon It makes me VERY upset that Project Hail Mary is a cultural and commercial success. I will insult audiences who enjoyed it (95% of audiences btw) to cope with the fact I’m too cynical and bitter to enjoy anything. I will call it reddit. That will show them. I am original and cool and in no way a pathetic loser without friends.
>>219270295>why not simply take Rocky's ship to do the complex maneuver? It probably would've tanked the Gs better, and Rocky is a better pilot than Grace. And even if you needed the Hail Mary... why the fuck would you put the grapple somewhere you have to space walk to to retrieve?Rocky's ship does not have any automated piloting functions. The Eridans never invented computers, they are operating purely on Newtonian principles, which is why they didn't understand the risk of radiation.
>>219270295>The entire grapple plotline seemed... pretty stupid all around. It felt like a major oversight from the earth designers to not include some way to sample something from a long way away in space either, but whatever. And even if you needed the Hail Mary... why the fuck would you put the grapple somewhere you have to space walk to to retrieve?Anon they had to reach into the planets atmosphere to get a sample. They can’t send out a drone into an atmosphere. You’re not sending multiple kilometers of chain on a deep space faring vessel. They took Grace’s ship because Rocky can survive in it easily. Grace can’t survive Rocky’s ship nearly as easily. Why are you all so fucking dumb
>>219270949>Rocky's ship does not have any automated piloting functions.I mean it's probably a non-issue since they had to manually pilot the ship to skim the planet's atmosphere

>>219271689It's called projection, ignore it. Movie was cringe.
>>219270200>>219271355it's clear from the movie the things feed on the sun's energy, they need a planet and atmosphere to reproduce, they need material to build more of themselves and the sun to get their energy for interstellar travel.Supposedly the book explains how they store energy but i don't know if it talks about the question i rose.

>>219272179Weird that 98% of audiences loved it, considering it was cringe and boring. You must have a discerning film palate to have the OPPOSITE opinion of everyone else! I mean what are the odds you’d have a contrarian opinion?!
>>219271197Do gay guys still find docking hot?
>>219272280As someone going into the movie knowing nothing about the books, it was pretty generic feel good comedy movie. Of course everyone is going to love a generic feel good movie. It just takes more to impress me. I loved interstellar, Arrival, Oblivion, Annihilation, hell even Independence Day was more exciting. Those movies actually had stakes and you knew anyone could die at any time. Project Hail Mary lacks any sort of meaningful tension to make me care about what was happening. Maybe if the movie showed the earth getting fucked up and people dying it would have generated some tension.
>>219272565They left out some material from the book that would've built tension oddly enough, for example the book shows them nuking the polar caps to buy time. This would've been a short scene, maybe 10mins tops including exposition, I don't know why they didn't include it.
It would be great if it didn't turn into a children's movie halfway through, made even more unbearable by Hollywood's generic "everyone survives through the power of friendship" ending.
>>219272972 (Me)Hell it wouldn't even need to really be a scene on its own, you could just make it a news broadcast that Grace is watching during the opening of another scene, or even just make it a background event or a passing dialogue mention if you really can't stretch the runtime any longer. Really easy to squeeze in.
I am going to see the movie a second time because he is so cute and beautiful and sexy. I love when he cries in movies.

>>219271080Couldn't they just drive both ship there?
>>219268166He vibe coded it.
>>219275718The biggest logic leap in the movie was that his girlfriend left him over having his head in the clouds. I almost thought he was making an excuse for being gay until they showed some sparks between him and Stratt.
>>219275841A bigger leap is that someone would leave Ryan Gosling
>>219275934Agreed.
I scene when Grace was leaving Rocky and kept turning around and doing a little jig made me groan. He did that shit three time. Did they forget that their planets are going to die?
>>219276645The whole point is that their planets are not going to die anymoreIt was a bit goofy but you are the whole circus
>>219276687Oh so they just know everything was going to go perfect in the four year time span it took to travel back to Earth? Didn't the movie open with two of the other astronauts dying in a coma? You're basically saying the movie knew there would be no more danger to anyone at that point.
>>219276645>Did they forget that their planets are going to die?Didn't seem so urgent in the movie. The actual urgency was going back to pick up Rocky before the amoeba ate his whole ship. Otherwise, the Astrophages take their time eating the sun. It was a very Disney-esque scene. Like Wall-E.
I wish Rocky could fist my bum and wiggle his little rock fingers.
>>219276735Doesn't matter if they die on the way back. They've got the taumoeba on board and plenty of fuel. As far as they're concerned, they've got it in the bag.
>>219257424Haven't seen the Martian because I don't really like Damon (and frankly Scott hasn't done anything good in a billion years), but this movie I automatically skipped because the book was literally unreadable, and the trailer made my skin crawl with cringe.God, I miss stuff made by normal people for normal people

>We need you to go on a ten-years-long trip to Tau Ceti, and we only have a few months to prepare, so you'll need to go as soon as possible before we have time to produce the fuel needed for the return tripThis part I understand. But why couldn't earth just...make a second rocket, carrying enough fuel for the return journey, once the first one left? Just to carry the astronauts home? Sure it'll be ludicrously expensive for *only* three lives at best, but these are the lives that would've saved mankind so I think they'd be allowed some kind of preferential treatment.Honestly given the stakes I'd have at least build a second rocket with no coma chamber to send regular people in "the long way". In the book they're limited to very few people because they're looking for a gene that would help the astronauts survive the 10-years-long coma, fair enough, but it still very much like looks like they're putting all their eggs on one basket.
>>219277340I don't think the translator was two-way. In the book the Eridians have perfect memory so Rocky just remembers everytime Grace says a word.
>>219277506>But why couldn't earth just...make a second rocket, carrying enough fuel for the return journey, once the first one left?because to charge up the astrophage on earth they need solar energy, which there won't be enough of because of the astrophage around the sun blocking it. actual question for any book readers: how can rocky echo-locate through his various bubbles and walls of xenonite, and thereby see Grace, navigate around the ship etc?
>>219277320>animes with sexualized little girls thenThat'4chan> watch project hail mary andThat's reddit.Hope that clears things up for you.
>>219277461Thinking I care about any of your "safe" words lmao
if the Astrophage need carbon and oxygen to reproduce and are mostly made of water, and they get carbon from Venus, how could they ever make enough of themselves to meaningfully dim the sun? there isn't THAT much total carbon in Venus' atmophere, its just one planet, and there are no other obvious sources of water near the sun to make more of itself. carbon dioxide doesn't even block UV, it blocks in the infrared spectrum which is why CO2 in our atmosphere lets sunlight in but then traps the reflected energy. just wondering if there is anything explaining this in the book
>>219277591Xenonite glass allows sound to pass through like a gas would which is why Rocky sounds the same inside and outside his suit.

>>219277686niceI saw the drinker interview so I knew Weir isn't above handwaving stuff, and that's basically what Xenonite is 'for' in the story, but it seemed like the kind of thing he would have felt he needed to specifically justify.
>>219277506Making enough fuel for the first journey basically destroyed every country's economy
>>219277686>>219277677magic unobtanium shit
>>219277591In the book, Rockys end of the tunnel he uses to dock with the Hail Mary had lots of different Xenonite panels, to give Grace the option of choosing one that's best to communicate through.Grace chooses a transparent panel obviously. Rocky didn't even know what transparency was, he just offered a load of different Xenonite panels with different acoustic properties
>>219257424It's funny that, despite this movie finding its profitable reddit audience for some reason, redditards still hunt dissenting opinions because they really cannot coexist with people not thinking like them, even if its just one person
