the entire plot started to collapse after the reveal, mostly because the author had no idea how to make it nuanced so one side just look like comically retarded chimps which makes it much harder to see eren as a villian said plot tried to portray him as since he wasn't really given any other viable options

As much as I liked the reveal that the rest of the world was just fine and had moved on while Paradis was North Korea-d I kinda wish I was there for the speculation and theoryautism people were into before that.

I'm not sure why that couldn't just be Ymir's doing. I speculate that Isayama wanted Ymir to remain sympathetic, but she didn't have to be. She had stockholme syndrome and was cumbrained into falling in love with Karl Fritz, and so she saw a way out by grooming an 11 year old boy into wanting genocidal revenge on the world by killing his mother. That works fine. Making Eren do it closes the loop, sure, but it wasn't necessary and takes away from the finale.
