Most zombies are very vocal. They'll growl and moan. Which is good 'cause that alerts you to their location. But the silent ones? Now that's dangerous. They'll sneak up on you

You'd be safe in any highrise just by blocking the steps, and while there you can kill hundreds with a pointy stick. Also for the zombi-ism is contagious scenarios people never wear any armor even though their weapons are nails and teeth which are easily defeated by chainmail or even MC gear and leathers. This is from the "have to write it dumb so the bad guys stand a chance" school.
