That doesn't sound like Rome at all and specifically Pontius Pilate who we know was brute from other historical sources. He had no problem crucifying the odd nail that stuck out, and Jesus fit that bill perfectly. The reality is the Gospels were written decades after the events and have very motivated reasoning to pin the blame on the Jews. Rome killed him, they likely needed some local Jewish authorities to interpret what Jesus was saying (Pilate wouldn't have likely know what "Messiah" really meant).
