There isn't much to get. It's Scorsese's first major public struggle session with Christianity. So he has to profane that which is sacred in order to excuse his own lack of virtue in the real IRL life. It's a very unfortunate movie, but it's a known pattern of behaviour by Scorsese. In Silence he rewrites the ending in order to push his bizarre views on universal salvation and in The Irishman he employs a very polemical Catholic priest. The Last Temptation is simply his worst work.
