What did Kubrick see in this guy? Poor actor, zero screen presence or charisma, couldn’t do an Irish accent, wasn’t particularly good looking. He made an already tedious movie even worse. Usually Kubrick leads could basically carry the entire movie by themselves, like Jack or Malcom McDowell. No wonder Barry Lyndon is his “forgotten” film.
Not going to lie this is probably his weakest films. I don't get why it was hyped so much here.

He's the only reason why Barry Lyndon isn't his Magnum Opus. Absolute charisma void tainting one of the most visually beautiful movies ever put into film.

I think he was supposed to look like he was resigned to fate dragging him through his horrible and retarded life at all times. I think it was intentional and maybe didn't come across perfectly
