What did Kubrick see in this guy? Poor actor, zero screen presence or charisma, couldn’t do an Irish accent, wasn’t particularly good looking. He made an already tedious movie even worse. Usually Kubrick leads could basically carry the entire movie by themselves, like Jack or Malcom McDowell. No wonder Barry Lyndon is his “forgotten” film.
>>
Not going to lie this is probably his weakest films. I don't get why it was hyped so much here.
>>
>>219325092
there is a direct inverse correlation between how much Ryan O'Neal speaks and how good the film is.

Kino where he barely speaks:
>Barry Lyndon
>Paper Moon
>What's Up Doc?

Dog shit films where he keeps yappin:
>Irreconcilable Differences
>The Main Event
>Fever Pitch
>>
>>219325092
>O'Neal was in a relationship with actress Farrah Fawcett from 1979 to 1997. The relationship was tumultuous due to his infidelity and volatile behavior. Fawcett ended the relationship after she discovered O'Neal in bed with actress Leslie Stefanson.
>In her 2014 memoir, Anjelica Huston claimed that O'Neal physically abused her.
>In her autobiography, A Paper Life, Tatum wrote that she had suffered physical and emotional abuse as a result of her father's drug abuse.
>Griffin O'Neal also suggested their family's problems stemmed from Ryan. "My father gave me cocaine when I was 11 and insisted I take it", he said. Griffin added, "He was a very abusive, narcissistic psychopath. He gets so mad he can't control anything he's doing."
>In 2007, O'Neal was arrested for shooting at Griffin, which he claimed was in self-defense; charges were dropped. O'Neal refused to allow Griffin to attend Fawcett's funeral in 2009. In 2009, O'Neal infamously hit on Tatum at Fawcett's funeral, not recognizing her as his daughter.
>Redmond has struggled with drug addiction for most of his adult life. In 2008, O'Neal and Redmond were arrested for drug possession in their Malibu home. In 2018, Redmond was arrested and charged with attempted murder, robbery, assault and drug possession after he allegedly tried to rob a convenience store in Santa Monica. In an interview from jail he blamed his struggles on his parents

He was a piece of shit

he was one of those guys everyone kept trying to force in the 70s. he was in walter hill's the driver too
>>

He sounds incredibly based though

The studio literally gave Kubrick a list of actors, and he had to choose his main star from that list if he wanted the film to get made. Ryan O'Neal was the least offensive name on there
>>

People don't get that the point of Barry Lyndon was to show what it was like living during those times, that if you weren't working or fighting it was a lot of tedium.

So in this regard he was perfect, a completely average and boring lead to compliment the mood Kubrick was aiming for and why you wouldn't have wanted someone with charisma who would take away from the drudgery atmosphere he was going for!!!FACT!!!
>>
He's the only reason why Barry Lyndon isn't his Magnum Opus. Absolute charisma void tainting one of the most visually beautiful movies ever put into film.
>>

>He was a very abusive, narcissistic psychopath
most well adjusted celebrity

>not realizing the genius of I cannot find the ribbon kino
he was meant to be a fish out of water dumb hick character that the irish could self-insert into and possibly go "hey I could be royalty too if only I acted a bit more civilized".
>>
>>219326138
Which I also realize is ironic since Kubrick left ireland for the IRA chimping out making threats on his life. It's not different than all these films showing negros in position of prestige, in the hope that some will watch and choose a life that's not a gangbanger selling crack.

I think he was supposed to look like he was resigned to fate dragging him through his horrible and retarded life at all times. I think it was intentional and maybe didn't come across perfectly

I can't believe you forgot The Driver, his quintessential non speaking role

Congratulations, you've realized that "Barry Lyndon is Kubrick's best" is the clearest pseud-marker in existence
>IT'S LIKE A LE PAINTING
No it isn't. It looks like any washed-out '70s period flick. The only part that resembles a painting is the fact that there are lots of long shots with high headroom, everything else is blocked in a sterile and flat way that is vastly different from the paintings he is supposedly imitating
>BUT THE EPIC NASA LENS
Is this supposed to be evidence of quality? David Lean had a whole lens built from scratch for a single shot in Lawrence and I've never once seen anyone fellate him for it, because that film actually stands on its own merits

Anyways, even aside from the overhyping of the film's technical aspects, Barry Lyndon is worthless. It's peak cinema for people who have seen less than 10 films made before 1950

Because the actor is a lame disingenuous retard which fits the character to a T

Sometimes a shitty actor is good for a specific role. Like the AJ and Jackie Jr actors in the Sopranos.

That's a self-referential term if I've ever heard one.

>Cinematography alone makes a good movie.
You need more film literacy.

This anon is onto something >>219325332 he's not a good actor, not even conventionally attractive, but he has a wounded sensitivity to him. Like a whipped dog.
>>
>>219328924
so is it blocked in a sterile and flat way indistinguishable from any other 70's flick, or does it have good cinematography? you seem confused
