Was New York in the 1970s as ugly as the movies portray it?
>>
>>219327924
If you thought the piss smell of modern NYC was bad, imagine the piss smell being 10x stronger with millions of filled up garbage bags rotting away in the summer heat to accompany it. That was the 70s in NYC.
>>
>>219327924
It has only gotten worse since then.
>>
Yes. I was there in 1985 as a child.
Disgusting.
>>
the 70s were awful in general for america, shit economy, crime, the occult, 60s hippy utopianism turns into hedonistic disco/punk rock dystopia, terrible fashion, in retrospect maybe music was good, glam rock, funk, r&b, disco, punk, metal, early rap.

jimmy carter replaces a paranoid nixon and tells americans the truth in his malaise speech, and then we kick him out and hire an actor to tell us everything will get better, and for a decade or two it kind of did
>>
>>219327924
It was ugly but in terms of crime it was nothing compared to early 90s
1990 people were basically getting shot in NYC like fucking Brazil

>>
>>219327924
Watch the movie taxi driver. That wasn't fake. Scorsese just shot downtown manhattan at 2 am.
>>
>>219328691
Also see The Taking of Pelham 123 for gritty 70s New York City kino.

>Was New York in the 1970s as ugly as the movies portray it?
yes, and the country was far more free.
>>
>>219327924
It takes an army of police to keep NYC inhabitable. Chicago is only able to secure a little area around the river with cops stationed every 100 feet, everywhere else is still Mad Max just like NYC was.
>>
>>219328060
how did they make things better?
>>
>>219330558
Rudy Guliani
>>
>>219330593
That's right. Cuomo too.

they made it less free, and worse.
>>
>>219330888
Its one of the safest big cities in America now, thanks to Rudy
>>
>>219330888
The freedom of getting mugged and shot in the face.
>>
>>219331006
tell that to the people on 9/11 bro
>>
>>219331071
if there is zero crime, then you dont live in a free society, you live in a police state
>>
>>219330888
You've never been to New York City.
>>
>>219330558
Giuliani fixed crime and then the developers moved on, but with Bloomberg the construction only benefited multi millionaires with all the empty 10 milion apartments in skyscrapers so now people want to return to the gritty ugly NYC just to make it more affordable. It's sad that they couldn't find a balance.
>>
>>219331074
Yeah, why didn't Rudy use his mayoral powers to stop the planes.
>>
>>219330558
They didn't.
>>
>>219331173
the real question is why did he put the cities command center inside the tower.... curious
>>
NY77 The Coolest Year In Hell is an ok documentary that covers some of the basics in a seminal year, the blackout, son of sam, mayoral politics, drugs, poverty, and a lot of music related culture. Has a bit of everything from the time and quite a bit of archive material.
>>
>>219331224
Wasn't it inside WTC7 or something? In any case, NYC's emergency services acted almost immediately and actually prevented hundreds if not thousands of deaths by quickly and effectively keeping bystanders away from the towers before the collapses.
>>
>>219331095
and thats why Scorsese's movies are a celebration of freedom and how great america used to be

Manhattan doesn’t really have a piss smell anymore. Thats only in shitty parts of Queens and the Bronx.
Truthfully the whole city is pretty nice now. Not much character. Flyover bumpkins have this idea that it’s still taxi driver because they only go to Times Square

I really hate how most cities deal with those windowless walls between building of different heights, how do you call that in english? it's medianeras in spanish, spain is notorious for having these ugly walls

No. The movies were only showing the nice parts, because the ugly parts were too dangerous to shoot in.
>>
>>219331006
Yeah it's full of hipsters and the rent is 100000$ a month. The banksters killed NY.
>>
>>219331517
They're great as long as there's no "street art" on it. Street art kills neighbourhoods
>>
>>219327924
Is that from a real flick?
>>
>>219328464
Apparently the reason it got cleaned up in the 90's was because the mayor at the time was reading a European travel book and was horrified by it advising visitors to NYC to never make eye contact with people on the street, in case it led to an assault.
>>
>>219327924
Damn i didn't know NYC was basically a fucking third world country in the 70s. No wonder all the good superheroes were being made at that time, you need to imagine a world where good folks just btfo of the bad guys or somethig.

Nigger
>>
Friendly reminder that proactive and aggressive policing policies like 'stop and frisk' and racial profiling fixed the city. It's only gotten worse since they stopped.
>>
Spielberg went to shit but some of his early films are really slept on. Duel primarily, that movie is altogether a great film that makes for a great thriller and man vs movie.
>>
>>219330787
This one was pretty good
>>
>>219327924
It was a shithole until Giuliani cleaned it up, cleaned up the graffiti, and disappeared all the homeless. I remember hearing actual complaints in the 90s that Times Square was like Disney World and that rendered it soulless or something without all the sex clubs, pushers, hookers, and porn theaters.

Definitely made for kino viewing though.

>Taxi Driver
>All of Frank Henenlotter's stuff (Basket Case, Brain Damage, Frankenhooker, etc)
>Larry Cohen's stuff (Q The Winged Serpent, The Stuff, etc)
>Half the low-budget horror and exploitation movies at least open in New York, usually extra ugly because it's shot in the winter. Italians loved doing that.
>The Warriors
>CHUD
>Escape from New York (though mostly shot in St Louis, but still shitty)
>Street Trash
>Maniac
>Jason Takes Manhattan
>TMNT

This is by design. Otherwise, constitution gun laws and good self-defense laws would allow scores of bodies to get dropped over a few years and the problem would begin solving itself.
>>
>>219331733
It was Giuliani targeting his paisanos in the mafia

Were the 50's and the 90's the only time that America wasn't a shithole?
