I hadn't gotten to seeing this ghibli film because it wasn't fantasy based and after watching it last night I was hugely missing out. The story of a jap plane designer artist and engineer and the entire thing is underscored with the sense that these will be used in the coming world war but its barely discussed and that creates a fantastic atmosphere. The score of it really demonstrates this with a sort of ominous chill running through it. I heard some were upset that it didn't demonize imperial japan enough which is just silly. The only flaw is that the romantic subplot that wasn't based in reality (the rest is semi true) kinda takes over the latter half of the film and takes away from the aviation kino. Overall much better than Boy and Heron and would've made for the ideal final Miyazaki film.
Its romanticize the military industrial complex.
The way the war felt around the corner was kino. Could really sense the consequences of the plane development. The German character was based as hell too, castorp

Shame you dont get high quality detail in animated films like this anymore. Disney used to do it

>>219335174People freaked out over this being a celebration of imperial Japan. If you watch it, it’s more of a meditation of what it means to follow your dreams and how that can come into conflict with the world at large.

>>219335174>The only flaw is that the romantic subplot that wasn't based in realityThe biggest flaw for me was the foley work of airplane noises being done by people blowing raspberries into a microphone. Can’t suspend disbelief when the soundscape reminds you of a six year old boy running around the house with a toy plane making zooming noises.
