buddhism was incorporated flexibly into eastern culture, not just as a faith, even if japan had shinto alongside it at the same time. Abrahamic religions cannot take a majority foothold in japan simply because culturally they have no natural on-ramp point, and buddhism had a headstart to integrate itself for centuries, simple as. natural geography of japan being an island nation was overlooked by the portugese
