They imprisoned Hess for life for crimes against peace and he spent the entire war as a PoW in Britain. I am almost certain that they would have hanged Goering even with absolute and conclusive proof that he had no knowledge of the Holocaust because he was one of the persons instrumental in bringing about WW2.Additionally, the moment in which the gotcha comes out felt incredibly insulting to my intelligence as a viewer. The American lawyer comes up with a document that does not directly refer to extermination of Jews (it uses an euphemism) as conclusive proof, and is suddenly shocked and bewildered when Goering interprets the euphemism as simply being an euphemism. The average member of any secondary school debate club would have come up with that exact same argument on the spot, and the supposedly cream of the crop American lawyer couldn't think of it. He then has to get bailed out by the English lawyer with the "secret information" obtained from the psychatrist.
I liked it but I found some parts weird. Like when Goering pulls up the nytimes.com/archives page on his heilPhone and starts showing everyone the 6 million articles from the 20's.
