>22 minutes about Troy McClure fucked fishes jokesWhat exactly was the joke here? Some real incident reference or a fetish projection?
He was Kanye's mentor.
>>219411581The fish was a metaphor for Heather O'Rourke. It was making fun of Steven Spielberg and his friends murdering that little girl.
It's a Hollywood American thing, you wouldn't understand
>>219411581It’s a perversion that is suitably funny without crossing into TV-MA territory
They needed to play up the "celeb with a wife beard" thing but wanted to be more ridiculous, so it's some weird nebulas fetish involving fish. Selma's deadpan "are you gay?" followed up by his "Gay? I WISH!" kills me.
>>219411581>>219415047I thought it was riffing on the Richard Gere rumors. Came about in the 80s, and early Simpsons is just a bunch of references to 80s cultural events.
>>219415047"Don't you have everything you ever wanted here? Money, security, a big, hot, flat rock for Jub Jub?"
>>219415144Could be. Was Greer considered washed-up in the 80s already? I never thought of McClure specifically as a riff on Greer, but a general parody of washed-up movie stars.
>>219415166Jub Jub is fantastic. He's everywhere you want to be.
>>219415144It's not specific to any one celebrity. You have to remember Troy McClure represents multiple eras of Hollywood. Early simpsons has a lot of references to the 60's and 70's cause the writers had lived through that. There were lots of closeted actors. Cary Grant for example, lived with another actor for 10+ years.
>>219411581Huge uncut bbc flopping around right in front of your face on Christmas day.
>>219415385>>219415427I was specifically thinking of the "weird animal fetish" aspect.
>>219415427He was gay, Cary Grant?
>>219415486That was done because it had to be silly >>219414667 pretty much nails it. You couldn't do a real one. You're trying to connect dots the writers didn't place. The simpsons was still a family friendly show.
>>219415543Randolph Scott lived with him, at his house, for years. Maybe they were just really good friends.
>>219415633how big was the house?
>>219415144this is what i thought it was too
>>219415657it was called Bachelor Hall, certainly not a cover for anything.
>>219415633Is this covered in that documentary The Celluloid Closet? Been on my watchlist for years but never gotten around to it.
>>219415591Tbf this is from the Wikipedia entry for that episode>The rumours of Troy McClure having a bizarre fetish for marine life mirror sex rumours about Richard Gere and a gerbil.I think the writers knew what they were doing.
>>219415926no clue, I just know this piece of history. It's really too bad too. Im pretty sure James Wale was out, and he was a director, and didn't affect his career. Actors were held to different standards.
>>219416041That's a wiki, anyone can edit that. The Gere thing has always been a rumor with nothing to back it up, lots of people assumed Sylvester Stallone started the rumor cause of their feud, though he has denied it.
>>219415803>>219416058I remember seeing that movie "charade" with Audrey Hepburn and I don't remember anything about the movie. I only remember that it was comfortable to watch
>>219416232Yes, all that to say that many people have made the connection. So it's not implausible it was a deliberate analogy from the writers.
>>219415385The name Troy McClure is a composite of two actors who I can't quite remember the names of. Doug McClure and someone else, probably.
>>219411581I think it was just a broad joke about any number of Hollywood figures who have been rumored to have freakishly bizarre sexual proclivities.
>>219411581
>Troy McLure>Lure>fishget it?
>>219411581there were many jokes-Marge says people don't do that kind of thing with fish and it cuts to a closeup of Troy's aquarium bumper sticker-the mobsters said Troy "sleeps with the fishes" but they meant it literally-when he finds out he's going to get a starring role, Troy shouts "I'm going to Seaworld!" parodying the Disneyworld phrase.-not a jokey-joke, but Troy's "sexual abnormality" speech performed impeccably by Phil Hartmanthose are exactly the jokes there
>>219417984>-the mobsters said Troy "sleeps with the fishes" but they meant it literallyJoe Mantenga called them after this episode and said he'd always do Fat Tony lines even if it's a single line following this episode. They just had Hartman do an impression and Fat Tony noticeably sounds off.
