>in the beginning of the episode jackie is acting boss because dimeo is in prison
>dimeo is never mentioned again

That's mean Junior wasn't even the boss and Tony wasn't the acting boss but third in line. How did Chase miss this?
>>

There was like 18 months between the pilot and the rest of season 1, they rewrote it
>>
A lot of shit from the first season died on the vine
>>
>>219412193
The original pitch for the series was just, "Suburban mob boss goes to therapy and has to deal with his annoying family," and it was intended as a standalone movie, not a tv series. HBO shot down the movie, but greenlit it as a pilot, so S1E1 is reallt just an adapted screenplay of that original script.

Once the show got picked up for a full season run, they rewrote a lot of the characters. The pilot had other weird shit like Silvio being more of a random associate than Tony's #2, Artie being a random high school buddy Tony had fallen out of touch with rather than his best friend, etc.

Most pilots are much different than the rest of the series, since more often than not pilots are never picked up to develop into a full show.
>>
DiMeo, whatever happened there.
>>
>>219412193
It was a pilot, I’d give him a break. Showrunners don’t even know if their show will even last a season at that point

They mentioned him again in S1E02 so it's not just a pilot thing.
Jackie Sr says to Tony
>I may be acting boss while the old man's a guest of the government.
THEN they never mentioned him again. So the excuse of it being the pilot doesn't work.

There was a ton of other shit retconned. Tony says he sold his mother's house in S1 yet in S2 she inexplicably lives there again. In s5 they establish Hugh as a WW2 vet then, 2 episodes later, have his 75th birthday which makes him too young to have served. Then there's all the scenes that got clumsily dubbed whenever the script randomly changed in the middle of filming.

Chase never cared about details and constantly retconned things whenever it was convenient for the plot. Need more proof? Watch TMSON

Who should have played DiMeo, had he been a real character?

David Chase

Also in S01E04 Tony says "If the old man were here, instead of in that cell in Springfield"

Old man DiMeo cucked out to the Aprile family.

>Has no sons in the business
>Names Jackie Aprile acting boss
>Rocco DiMeo humiliated by Richie Aprile, can therefore never be boss

The guy was completely inconsequential.
>>
>>219412279
In the pilot Tony is just outright the boss, Jackie doesn't exist.

Yes. You probably don't get invited to parties.

why are americans so fascinated with organised criminals?
they're just an accepted factor of life in yuro countries
did bringing all those nigger slaves that would end up becoming the 'hood niggas' ruin them?
>>
>>219412567
Welllll, he was stationed in Nova Scotia.
idk, season 5 was in 2004. That puts Hugh's birth in 1929. If he enlisted towards the end of the war, say 1944 or 1945, he'd be 15 or 16, and if he was eager and willing to fudge his age a bit and tell the recruiters he was 18, it's feasible that he could've gotten in. They didn't have IDs and computerized data collection back then like we do today. Plus, for the Navy in particular, it was somewhat common practice to take in younger teenage boys as ensigns.

>why are americans so fascinated with organised criminals?
Because we vote them into office we need to know their behaviors

Wrong

The fascination with the mafia is because of the clan structure, hierarchy and patriarchal relations. The criminal aspect of it is just added spice.

What I wanna know is do you think had they stuck with the original idea of it being a standalone movie, would it have the same impact as it would like the show or be another forgotten HBO movie like that one with Peter Weller where he sets up a telephone line for people and the only memorable scene is the one Eazy E sampled for his music.
>>
>>219417451
>it's still possible he served as a 15 year old somehow!!!
No, it's just another detail Chase fucked up like he fucked up tons of others in the show

This. Also the internal politics of organised crime is pretty interesting as it's like real life politics except these guys don't pretend they won't kill you for getting out of line.

Because everything is bullshit. Bullshit at work, bullshit at home, bullshit in politics. God forbid we looked up to mafia figures when we were kids because there was a sense of justice missing from the world and these guys knew how to settle the score. Call it right wrong or indifferent but it works

>why are americans so fascinated with organised criminals?
If Americans are lucky, they get to grow up in the "nuclear family" which is just one man's family isolated and removed from the rest of his kin. If they're unlucky then they grow up with a single mom. Capitalism did this because the traditional extended family unit was far less exploitable. If you had 2 dozen relatives with collective lands and resources around, you wouldn't care if you got fired so you wouldn't put up with exploitation. Capitalism needed commoner families to disperse so that they'd desperately chase the carrot and existentially fear the stick.
So media about extended families working in their self-interest like the mafia genre, game of thrones, yellowstone, etc simulates that extended multi-generational family experience. They're fascinated because it's showing them a fundamental piece of the human experience they simply don't have. Same reason poors watch shows about rich people, or virgins watch media about dudes who have lots of sex.
