He joins the fight in his plane, not a jet. The reactions of the fighter pilots and ground crew were never reshoot. They figured Bill Pullman's lines worked with Quaid in a jet. Reshooting the ground control scenes would have been very expensive. The isolated shots of Bill Pullman in the cockpit were already done up in special effects, so also expensive. They did reshoot Quaid joining in for the training, explaining his experience. It was a simple set up, a bunch of guys sitting outside on a tarmac with the military guy.
