I suppose he chooses kids rather than people his age because people his age and who are junkies are shown to be untrustworthy, aggresive, and mentally ill. Also, I've always thought his character progression was meant to mirror Cutty's: from bleak beginings to someone who makes an effort to inspire the next generation into being better through their own experiences.

Some day I'm gonna eventually sit down and watch The Corner...I've seen a few episodes on Youtube but it seems much slower than The Wire. I know it came before The Wire but I kinda like the idea of them focusing more on the drug addict/drug aspect of the things than the drug dealing.
