APOLOGIZE.
Don't need to I don't really hate it.
>>219422576I'm sorry I wasn't worthy of such kino
Dennis Hopper will always be the OG Bowser for me.
>>219424046Bob-omb!
>>219422576But I've seen it dozens of times?
>>219422576There is something genuinely special about a movie that tries that hard to do something different, even if it misses the mark. It has way more soul and "weirdness" than many of the polished, safe blockbusters we see now.Instead of a bright Mushroom Kingdom, we got Dinohattan. It was a gritty, rain-slicked, industrial nightmare fueled by fungus. It felt like Blade Runner for kids. It’s essentially a sci-fi fever dream that just happens to feature two plumbers named Mario. The directors wanted a dark, adult sci-fi film, while the studio wanted a lighthearted kids' flick. It is a masterpiece of beautiful, chaotic ambition. The result was that glorious, tonal car crash of cyberpunk dinosaurs and slapstick humor I love. It’s the ultimate "guilty pleasure" that has rightfully earned its status as a cult classic.
>>219424513Same. I have it on blu-ray, even. You can't call yourself a Mario fan until you've watched the 2-hour extended workprint version, in all of its VHS quality.
>>219422576Why? I never did anything wrong to this film. We are the best of friends.
>>219424919Samantha Mathis was so cute, then she disappeared off the face of the Earth.
>>219424851The Morton Jankel cut? I've been saving it for my next SMB (Super Mario Bros. Movie Blitz).
It’s literally the opposite of the newer movies, which is a good thing. The movie oozes soul.
>>219424919>>219425413Saw it in the theater as a kid; this specific scene is HIGHLY evocative to me and immediately trips my nostalgia circuit whenever I watch it.
>>219425852Either the workprint or the version that someone made where they mashed up the theatrical footage with remastered workprint footage where it belongs in the movie (well, as remastered as they could make it). I heard of that version but never saw it/ can't find it.>>219425891Iconic.
>>219425891Not a bit of CGI in sight and so soulful.
>>219424450You know what I love about mud? It’s clean and it’s dirty at the same time.
>>219425891>HIGHLY evocative to me and immediately trips my nostalgia circuitI know what you mean. Between this, the Never Ending Story, and this goofy ass post-apoc kids movie called Solarbabies, there's stuff buried in the primeval mists of my memory that feels like turning on an electric circuit when it gets triggered.
>>219422576It's great then they warped through the wall & the film gets really really weird
>>219422576The one thing the movie did wrong was when Mario and Luigi put on the nighclub outfits, why is Mario in yellow and Luigi in red? Mario should only ever wear Red, Blue, Brown, Black or White and Luigi should only wear Green, Blue or White. Neither should ever wear yellow and in no way should Luigi wear green.
>>219426160Pretty much the only CGI was the Goomba transformation the de-evolutions toward the end (Scapelli and Koopa), the mushroom when Mario says "trust the fungus," and the King's re-evolution. And IMO those effects still hold up.
>>219426070>Either the workprint or the version that someone made where they mashed up the theatrical footage with remastered workprint footage where it belongs in the movie (well, as remastered as they could make it). I heard of that version but never saw it/ can't find it.I'm uploading the Morton Jankel VHS cut right now. I'll post the link in a few minutes.
>>219422576This flick is on the complete opposite side of the shit sphere from the other Mario movies. I will never apologize for anything.
>>219426330>Luigi should only wear Green>in no way should Luigi wear green
>>219426355That's what it's called? Okay, thanks.>>219426317>the wall sceneI guess I >>219426343 should have mentioned that too, but I guess I meant "CGI creature effects."And it was really cool how it took a dozen puppeteers for Yoshi and somehow digitally erased the cables running into him during the few shots where you see his whole body.
>>219424819Thanks ChatGPT
>>219426330At least they wear their iconic colors during the last 20 mins of the movie.
ATTENTION KOOPALING WORKERShttps://limewire.com/d/7ol8s#6V10RLPPVR Here's the extended (blended?) cut
>>219426798Thanks, famicom. Just saved it to my computer and external HDD for preservation purposes. Will probably watch it this weekend.
>>219422576>>219422576Even as a kid I loved this movie. I was happy Hollywood took my vidya srsly enough to cast real actors... was still mad bowser wasn't a dinosaur tho
>>219427458>was still mad bowser wasn't a dinosaur thoHis evolution was "wonderful and sweet." At least he de-evolves into some sort of dinosaur-like thing at the end before splashing onto the ground as a puddle. In the workprint, the pizza delivery guy drives by and tosses the pizza in box on said puddle, thus giving humorous closure to the pizza running gag.
>>219427566Lol so THAT was the intended payoff of the pizza joke? That's still lame but at least it's something
>>219427778I just thought it was fucking hilarious that the guy did indeed deliver that pizza. There are plenty of continuity errors. The green slime on the floor of the Devo Chamber was an error, there was a removed scene where Koopa de-evolved an employee into slime to make a point. Would have made Koopa's de-evolution at the end very ironic. There's also Iggy & Spike's anti-Koopa rap scene. Another continuity error since Leena says "Iggy and Spike have been preaching your overthrow at the Boom-Boom Bar" and you the viewer are like... what? (the rap was cringe but they really should have left it in)
This is the Zoomer equivalent of Adam West Batman of Videogames Capeshit
>>219429034U mad bro?
>>219429034>SMB '93>le zoomersWhat? Zoomers were just an itch in their daddies' nutsacks in 1993.
>>219429034If anything its the Snyderverse of Videogame Capeshit.President Koopa is just Donald Trump, the Mushroom Kingdom is a dark and gritty city with no hint of whimsy or joy, the big fish with kissy lips is a fat black dominatrix that Mario has to fuck in a PG-rated way to advance the plot, the brothers have to rescue a bunch of prostitutes the Koopas kidnapped and there's creature design by Patrick Tatapoulos who actually worked on Zack Snyder's DC movies as well as the shitty Roland Emmerich Godzilla that /tv/ zoomers also like to suck off.
>>219426798so this is where kino and kinoplex originated
>>219430098This. Mario 1993 was trying to be grimdark along the lines of Blade runner or Brazil. Honestly I think it's better for it. Video games were trying to be taken more seriously in that Commodore 80s to 90s era. I think a steam punk gritty mario works better than some golly gee back to the future style mario we could have gotten.
>>219430326The plan was Princess Bride Mario with Arnold Schwartzenegger in full makeup as Bowser before they gave it to the Max Headroom guys.
>>219430200Oldfag here. Kino is a Russian word for movies. When we would have our old "arronofsky or Felini" jerknoff sessions people would accuse plebs of not understanding "True Kino"
>>219422576I never really disliked it. Is it a faithful adaptation of the Mario games? No. But wtf would that look like anyways? It's not like there's a coherent story and timeline to it all. This was just weird enough to pique my interest.
>>219430469No, the other anon is correct.
>>219430691It's just the Wizard of Oz/Alice in Wonderland with two Italian-American men replacing the little girls.
I remember being like 5 or 6 when the movie showed here in the country on TV. I'm not sure if we videotaped it but I remember watching it live with my mom. I remember right at the beginning of the movie she asked me "Oh so Luigi is a younger man?" I was like "I guess he is!" I'd only ever seen Mario on the cover of Super Mario Land on the gameboy, never seen a drawing of Luigi. Maybe it's time I see the movie again.
>>219430691the chemistry between Hoskins and Leguziamo as bickering siblings saves this movie for me
>>219425413She was Frank Castle's dead wife in the second best Punisher movie
>>219426406awwww fuck.... I fucking... damn it...
Bump
>>219430924The cousins Iggy and Spike are great too. They play idiots really well and then geniuses really well. It's a cartoony idea on paper that actors pulled off.
>>219422576I loved that movie as a kid in the early 90s. I didnt care it strayed so much from source material because the adventure and action was fun. I remember laughing at a joke my dad told. He's a police officer and he said he thinks they should have cages like that at his division.
In many ways the world portrayed in this movie is the idealized world that 4chan chuds wish to live in.
>>219422576People who enjoyed this movie are spiritually Indian.
>>219426798>limewirebro this better not be britney_spears_pics.exe
>>219424851>I have it on blu-ray, even.I have two different copies, both from Umbrella. The movie's a cult classic and really ambitious given how sparse the source material was at the time. Going full Blade Runner was an inspired choice given the content, even if it was pretty consistent for the era.
>>219447280Lol. Yeah, good times.
>>219422576NoI did theatrical resumes in Wilmington NC at the time and the production on this film was so demoralizing to the cast they performed Shakespeare at night in their rental bungalows to remind each other they were trained actors
there really should be a documentary about the making of this movie. what the filmmakers were thinking, stories about Bob Hoskins getting drunk as fuck during filming, etc. Even the practical effects were cool
>>219450965>there really should be a documentary about the making of this movie. what the filmmakers were thinking, stories about Bob Hoskins getting drunk as fuck during filming, etc. Even the practical effects were coolThat's literally on the Umbrella blu-ray release. It went deep into all the drama, both on-set and backstage. A must-watch. Dunno if it can be found online, though. There is a similar behind-the-scenes drama video on youtube that delves into some of the same topics.>>219450800>they performed Shakespeare at night in their rental bungalows to remind each other they were trained actorsFucking hilarious if true.
the movie sucks. Zoomers like it and defend it on 4chan and social media which proves it. I was born in 83 and was the target audience because I actually played the games (not fucking Sunshine like zoomers) this movie was the first time I was gutted and disappointed by a movie. Hope everyone involved burns in hell
>>219451655I was born in 89 and I've always loved this movie
>>219451655it's a fun and weird movie if you can allow yourself to disconnect it from the games. i loved the games as a kid and this movie. never understood why people seethed so much
>>219451828I'm just lashing out. I hate the revisionism 'omg it's actually GOOD guys" it's not good, it fucking sucks and 99 percent of the kids agreed with me that it sucked and was a huge disappointment for fans of the video games. IT's target audience isn't college grad youtubers 30 years later, it was supposed to be for kids and it failed and sucked, was boring, was ugly, couldn't even make them brothers, luigi didn't even have a moustache, fuck this movie
that jankel cut is on archivedotorg
>>219452186what's that?
>>219452240it's an internet digital archive website but that isn't important right now
>>219452286jankel cut motherfucker, do you speak it??
