The series started declining after season 2 but 7 is where the series becomes unwatchable for the majority of fans. Complete wreckage with almost no redeeming qualities.

>>219455570The focal point of the first two seasons are that Rick is struggling with the fact that reality is infinite, and that as a master of reality, nothing really matters, but he can't help but want to be connected to his family. That's why the first two seasons are utter dynamite: the throughline is that everything Rick does is colored by him wanting to be his family. It's season 3 and onward that mucks this up because despite Jerry being right at the end of season 2 - Rick's actions put his family's lives at risk - and it seems like Rick accepts this fact and opts to get as far away from them as possible in galactic federation prison, despite this, season 3 makes it so Rick's plan was actually to get captured so he could destroy the federation from the inside and sabotage Beth and Jerry's marriage so that Rick could be the de facto head of Beth's side of the family. It makes no sense for Rick to have wanted this, not one bit, and that's why people subconsciously understood even back in the show's heyday that something was wrong with season 3. Season 3 is not without heart, however. Rick's arc is that despite being the most powerful man in the universe, he can't stand between Beth and Jerry (again, there was no reason for him to want to stand between Beth and Jerry) and that for all his godlike powers and touting that nothing matters, he decides to stay with his family. Even gods get lonely. Season 4 and on they just stopped caring. There are no more real arcs, no more real character intrigue. Rick already knows his presence harms his family, he knows he's a god who wants to be with his family, but he continues to put them in danger over and over. There are no more lessons learned from season 4 onward. Rick and Morty became another adult cartoon with above-average animation and sometimes above-average writing, but it was never as special as seasons 1 and 2.
