It probably makes sense on an interstellar spaceship hauling several trillion tons of ore, moving at fraction of light speed, because if it hits Earth it's game over, so better to self destruct it in case of problems. But then even debris from the self-destruction would obliterate a planet if the speed was high enough, so maybe it's useless anyway.
