Why is Matt Groening held in such high regard when his original vision of the Simpsons was nothing like what it turned out to be? I am not even talking about the contribution of the joke writers, the whole early concept was different. The only thing not changed from the pilots is the idea of a sometimes troubled but still loving 5 head family in a mid size town, basically Flintstones in modern times.

I haven't read it myself, but I have repeatedly head from people who have read "Life In Hell" (a comic that was solely Groening's creation) that it very plainly demonstrates that the success of The Simpsons was very, very much a product of collaboration and had very little to do with specifically Groening's creative abilities, such as Writing.
