>Malick’s filmmaking style is famously unique: he shoots quickly but spends years editing, employs voice-over instead of dialogue to express his films’ very vague plots, and sometimes spends years filming with actors only to leave the film entirely on the cutting-room floor. Knight of Cups, Portman says, was an improvised process, as the camera ran for as much as 30 minutes uninterrupted, following the actors as they moved, which made for an even larger acting challenge. “You do need to sort of stay in character, but at the same time, you always have to be aware that you’re filming. Because everything’s improvisational, the camera’s also improvisational. You have to be really aware of the camera, and, like, where you are in relationship to it because you have to lead it,” Portman says. “You can’t, like, get lost in the person, necessarily, because you still have to be aware that you’re making a movie.”

Tree of life
Either knight of cups or song to song was very close to tree of life for me and the other wasn't that great but I honestly can't remember which one is which
Hidden life was good
to the wonder was trash

Thin Red Line.
>>
this guy is absolute trash and obsessed with grass

Movies that are about nothing but a guy who plays a lot of pussy are boring.

Knight of Cups and Song to Song
The fact that a man in his seventies managed to do these movies brimming with youthful energy and soulful, creative enthusiasm seems absolutely miraculous. But these movies aren’t just sensuous experiences, they’re also vehicles for deeper Truths. Everyone won’t shut the fuck up about Heidegger’s influence on Malick but Neoplatonism is even more crucial to understand his films, especially the fragmentary style he perfected with To the Wonder. I don’t want him to do, bros. I want him to live another century. This nigga helped me overcome my suicidal tendencies.

his last film in which he films his own suicide, preferably from a self-inflicted shotgun blast to the head
>>
>>219473935
all those movies are good
>>
>>219462432
I liked A New World and Thin Red Line. Of the two, maybe Thin Red Line. Just because it covered the Battle of Guadalcanal in a cool way, and because he cut Adrian Brody almost completely out of the movie.
>>
>>219470928
I’ve seen all of them except knight of cups and the newest one. Cope harder zoomer.
>>
>>219474555
u sound mad
>>
>>219474555
If that's actually true you'd rank Tree of Life and A Hidden Life higher than Badlands and Days of Heaven since the former is better than the latter.
>>
The Thin Red Line
Badlands
Days of Heaven
The New World
The Tree of Life
To the Wonder
Voyage of Time: Life’s Journey
Knight of Cups

haven't seen the other two yet

Nobody believes this
>>
What is an earnest criticism of Tree of Life? (Vis a vis what it's trying to do, not It has no plot!!!!!)
>>
>>219478160
Its trying to present its director as a deep guy but he just comes across as a laughable pseud
>>
>>219478160
Take one day at a time and live life to your fullest! :^)
>>
>>219478160
it's a very personal movie he made solely for himself, it's hardly a universal experience
>>
>>219463586
Probably just an imprint from being in a shoe.
>>
>>219478292
Do you actually think the motivating agent in writingdirecting the movie is a desire to come off like "a deep guy"?
>>
>>219481632
Absolutely
>>
>>219480547
Certainly personal, hardly solely for himself. Definitely not universal. But so what? What movie is? And is that something worth striving towards in filmmaking? It seems the better movies coming out these days are those willing to bear smaller audiences.

>>219481693
I'm sorry your life is so devoid of emotional honesty
>>

no other filmmaker makes anything like it. His style is pure bliss.

Knight of Cups and Pocahontas are kino.
Song to Song is shit.
>>
>>219481810
>>219481819
its dishonest trash for pseuds who pretend to read Heidegger and say things like "muh faith"
>>
>>219481926
What is dishonest about it? That it did not resonate with you is perhaps an indictment of yourself as much as it is of the film

it's so unbelievably kino
>>
>>219482180

>>
>>219482498
the reason its so kino is because of his filming style. If it wasn't for that no one would remember it. Its the perfect style for that film too.
>>
>>219482602
the reason its so kino is because of the native waifu. If it wasn't for that no one would remember it. Its the perfect waifu.

>And as the moon rose higher the inessential houses began to melt away until gradually I became aware of the old island here that flowered once for Dutch sailors’ eyes—a fresh, green breast of the new world. Its vanished trees had once pandered in whispers to the last and greatest of all human dreams: a pure native waifu. For a transitory enchanted moment man must have held his breath in the presence of these waifus, compelled into an æsthetic contemplation he did not understand, face to face for the last time in history with something commensurate to his capacity for waifuism.
