I was shocked to find out how angry /tv/ gets when you point out how much of the Matrix is thematically a ripoff of Dark City. Like line by line. It's not like it matters since it's still a much better movie but it's still very interesting especially with how the Wachowskis couldn't conjure up another hit after that.
They are both pretty good but Matrix wins due to the action scenes. Roger Ebert thought Dark City was the best movie ever made though for some reason and promoted the hell out of it.

Dark City came out a year before The Matrix. There wasn't enough time to rip it off. There was just a general feeling that the system was bullshit back then.

The Matrix wins because it has a better cast and Yuen Woo Ping's fight choreography, which is so much cooler than people shooting mind beams at each other. And of course the groundbreaking sfx of The Matrix. It's really no contest
