Asylum and it’s not even close. Felt like they actually had a plan instead of just throwing shock shit at the wall for 10 episodes and calling it a day. Bro had aliens, serial killers, demonic possession, AND a nazi doctor somehow and it still felt cohesive.

Every season after that is just “cool aesthetic, zero payoff.” Freak Show had the best first 4 eps then completely shit the bed. Coven is tumblr bait. Murder House is kino but overrated.

Asylum actually felt bleak and mean in a way the show’s been chasing ever since.

I caught an episode of some later season and it legitimately looked like some daytime fag hag show with zero budget.

I don't know how it could possibly fall off so hard. The first few seasons came across as prestige television.

I don't recall exactly but it had some of the usual cast. I think it might've been the one with the antichrist where they're in the bunker, but I could be mistaken. Just looked like total amateurish garbage. Nowhere near the level of what I remember the show being and looking like.

That's a reasonable assessment.
I enjoyed Coven but it's just X-Men + Supernatural and treating it as a 'horror' story is dumb when it's a supernatural drama.
Asylum is better paced than Murder House but I think it shits the bed harder on the ending. Big problem with AHS is that the endings are usually pretty terrible.

Hot take but it's NYC.
Yes it's literal homosexuality the season but that is what makes it the most off putting and terrifying, Ryan Murphy doesn't hold back on portraying that period in faggot history. It's Cruising mixed with Silent Hill vibes.
