I've seen endless reels and what not that made TRG look like the spiritual successor to E&D. Was recently rewatching E&B and decided to watch two episodes of TRG and idk maybe it gets better but holy shit it feels so stale and completely lacking in comedic timing. Eastbound shits all over it in terms of volume of laughter, hell even likability of characters.

Had anyone seem both and can clarify this?

Gemstones improves as the season goes on, but Eastbound and Vice Principals are better shows. Gemstones really runs out of steam after two seasons

Eastbound is an all out attack while Gemstones is much more subtle. Both are great series. Gemstones improved every season and had one of the best episodes of TV in the past 20 years when they told the story of how their family came across the bible their father kept. Pure kino.

I want to let it mature on me, but out of the gate it feels bad seeing Danny McBride not out the gate fucking shit up and delivering the kind of comedic acting his whole career has been based off of (honestly seeing that its a "comedy-drama" makes it feel like it probably takes itself a little serious, like a coen brothers movie without good acting

he did have at least one subtle role pre-EBD. he was marrying Clooney's sister in Up In the Air. very restrained but good performance

It’s all the same Danny schtick but gemstones is more ambitious. Both ran a season or two too long and should have ended earlier. Even then he can’t wrap up with a satisfying conclusion.

The best McBride show is actually Vice Principals

EB&D went on too long, but also ended too abruptly. They could have made a longer sequence of him leaving the majors and choosing family over fame. The regression in everything after that point was just non-sequitor filler until it wound up right back at where we were when he walked off the field. RG is a better show. The characters all stay more consistent between seasons, without flanderization or too much regression. The catharsis the McBride loves having in his finalies is also much stronger in each of the RG seasons and executed better than in EB&D. Stronger cast too.

yeah one of the funniest shows i've ever seen. very underrated

Agree about RG, especially in casting, obviously grogginess and Goldman, but even Devine was ok (typecast in his bit). Cavelaro as Keene was unexpected genius, that carries / sold scenes.

Gonna probably watch this before TRG ngl, but will definitely give TRG its fair shot

Thanks for input guys

Gemstones was a rebuke of Vice Principals as McBride made Neal Gamby WAY too likable given the context of the show and Gambly being loved combined with the influx of Walt Goggin fans from The Shield and Justified, effectively brought in a ton of new fans to his work that never watched E&D. So McBride made his character in TRG even more unlikable than his E&D character to try and scare away those undesirables.

Godammit Gamby
