I thought the first movie was decent, as did a lot of people. Why does this one seem so divisive?

I can see why it was so abrasive to jewnalists after seeing it this week. If you haven't played Mario Galaxy at the least, 90% of the action setpieces and music will mean nothing to the viewer. I played those games growing up and even I was checking my watch at several moments during the film, which at least is only 90 minutes. The movie is essentially Mario porn/an advertisement for Mario products stretched to a feature length film.

People showed up because they loved the first one, but then got this crap, and half the audience is in Force Awakens-esque denial, and the other half just hated it outright. And then later they abandon Bowser.Peach leaves the Kingdom to go save someone leaving Mario in charge, she's then excited to see Mario when they end up in the same place.Bowser says he wants to be a good guy, it seems to set up a redemption arc, but this is all tossed away so he can be the big bad at the end. The movie practically punishes you for paying attention to it.
