Seems like a lot of the plot was lifted from Elroy/LA Confidential.

>detective trio
>woodrugh a war hero, fire related trauma
>vicaro-budd white similarities
>Hollywood orgy parties
>institute operator doing clandestine plastic surgery
>corrupt mayor/state police
>Chinatown style land deal

I very much enjoyed the show even if it had the depressing noir style ending. I've only read LA Confidential but I'm sure I'd find other homages to Elroy if I read his other novels

I've always wondered if the script was changed last minute or something because I recall before it came out pizza man saying it was going to be about the US transportation system and some occult connection and then the season came out and was about drug dealers, sex parties, and closeted cops and had fuck all to do with transportation.

I am pretty sure it got chopped up and changed a lot at the last minute, because the season's primary villain has like 2 speaking scenes and the actor is a fucking disaster. I'm pretty sure they recut a lot of things when they realized he was awful.
