they still have white people 80,000 years in the future?

It was the 60s man just go with it
>>
>>219487188
Humanity won't exist in 50000 years and even if we do, we're not leaving this planet or progressing any further. Things will only get worse as humanity becomes mostly Indian, mutt and Chinese.
>>
>>219487188
8,000 years in the future, retard. Hilarious you focus on the nukes when everyone is using knives
>>
>>219487830
Can't use guns because it would fuck up the planet's very fragile ozone layer or something.
>>
If I remember right, they're talked about as something exclusively held by the Great Houses and handed down from generation to generation as symbols of the Houses power. So they're more a legacy thing than something actively in use, actually using them in warfare against other human beings is illegal.

In the original story when he gets called out for using them Paul pulls a rules-lawyers move along the lines of "bitch please, I used them to clear a path through empty terrain so I could come and talk to you" , if he'd just dropped nukes on the Emperor and the Sardaukar he'd have voided his legitimate claim to rule

The Lasguns cause nuclear explosions shit for example. It's just an excuse for Herbert to have sword fights in a sci fi setting.
>>
>>219489231
>There's a clear and explained reason for why they use knives instead of guns

Oh? Would you like to post a scene from the movie where they mention it?
>>
>>219489412
If I'd find out that my enemy has a shield that causes a fucking NUCLEAR EXPLOSION if hit by a laser, I am immediately mouting laser gun on a remote drone.
It is infinitely amusing that in the end it's Warhammer 40k that has the least retarded tech in scifi fantasy setting.
>>
>>219489663
Qrd on Warhammer weapons?
>>
>>219489663
While you're doing that, the lasgun that THEY have mounted to do the same thing to you points at YOUR lasgun, blows it the fuck up, then shoots at your footsoldiers anyways and nukes them. Or at least tries to. By the time any of this has happened, all the foot soldiers deployed are scattered, in close proximity, or under cover, because no war can be established without foot presence.

Holy shit you're fucking retarded.
>>
>>219489663
That's where the "use of nuclear weapons on humans is illegal" part comes in.
People don't weaponize laser/shield interactions because they're almost impossible to tell apart from actual nukes, no House will risk becoming persona non grata over it.

iirc the only time a shield explosion trap is used in the book is by Duncan, who is in full Fuck It mode because House Atreidies have already been wiped and he does it to Sardaukar who can't complain because they can't admit they were there in the first place.
>>
>>219489831
guns and knives but bigger
>>
>>219490067
>then shoots at your footsoldiers
My footsoldiers don't have shields and just use remote drones, 50+ miles away.
>>
>>219489663
Dumbfuck. Drones in Dune have to be remote controlled through a radio meaning you're still in the vicinity of the explosion if a shield got hit by a laser. So what's the point of mounting a laser gun on a remote drone? Even if you survive the explosion the Landsraad will hunt you down since Nuclear warfare is banned. Fucking Retarded warhammer 40k enjoyer. Go back to playing with your overpriced toys you fucking painter.
>>
>>219489831
Warhammer heavily relies on close combat weapons, but the reason is that it is used by 8 feet tall superhumans who wear Stark tier high tech armor and these guys can fight without any rest whatsoever for three days in a row, so they routinelly run out of all ammo and have to just melee, run, cut and stomp through everything else.

Worst part about the shield nuke thing is that it could have simply been replaced with "the slow blade kills" where projectiles or laser bolts are moving so fast that the shield catches them, but a blade is slow enough it can push through. Like how silly putty doesn't break if you hit it with a hammer, but if you slowly press your thumb against it, it will deform.

if drones on Mars can be remote operated all the way from Earth(albeit with a 20 minute lag time), it's entirely possible for a drone with a lasgun to be operated by you while you're in orbit around Dune.

It doesn't, it says that air superiority is fleeting and impossible to rely on as a result. Your bombers and gunships surging overhead can just as easily become the enemies in a few hours, or be tied up completely in dog fights, or just be cleared out entirely from ATG positions.

Dune is shit. The book is shit, unreadable garbage with made up words that you're supposed to care about out of nowhere, the lore is absurd and all over the place. It tries to be sciency and mystical and fails at both, The follow ups just double down on the ridiculousness of it.

Lynch's movie suck, the 2000s series suck, these new movies are a borefest, concrete slabs, messianic cliches, a dentist's waiting room is more appealing and exciting than this.

>>219490976
>And starting intergalactic jihad is legal?

see here's the thing - the jihad doesn't happen in the book dune. it's this abstract thing that paul sees in his visions of some unknown point in the future, he spends the majority of the book haunted by the idea and determined to find a way to follow a good future path while also averting the jihad, until near the very end where he realizes it's too late and he's already gone past the branching point in history that triggers it, it's literally no longer in his control, nothing he can do including dying will stop it

so for all of the story, including the ending, paul is thorough about following the letter of the law if not the spirit of it at various times. it's why the entire marriage with the emperors daughter is done, to give him full legal and legitimate claim to the throne, the final discussions are making amends with the great houses to work as a united front to restore peace and order

the sequel novel basically ignores that final status quo by jumping ahead fifteen years and saying "so a jihad happened, and it ended three years ago. it was really bad. the greatest massacre in history and the great houses and the old system of order are basically defunct now" and goes into no further detail.

i think the series kinda shows the age when it was written. it probably made sense to herbert that the landsraad and the threat of collective sanctions and persecution would keep even evil factions like the harkonnen from using (self-)destructive terror strategies. the world had just come off ww2 after all. logically it does makes sense to refrain from those strategies because if you did, it means the honor code is donezo, the gloves are off, the world will devolve into chaos and everyone is going to use those same strategies against you until your house is totally raped and murdered

however as we have more recently learned, a bunch of irl factions have no qualms about using every evil strategy available to them because they're myopic and don't think logically
>>
>>219490528
Bro I'm not going to sit here and play pretend war armchair theorist with you. Because MY soldiers would win by just not activating their shields until enemy contact and using nets and jamming devices to take out the drones.

Even ignoring how silly it is, if lasers+shield causes boom then how the fuck that is not weaponised.

What is the purpose of shields if it can go nuclear when attacked. People would just use lasers to nuke cities
>inb4 it also makes laser go boom
makes zero sense. but even if it did then it would still be worth sacrificing a gun to blow up a city
>>
>>219489831
what looks like a normal pistol is actually a grenade launcher

1) there's MAD guaranteed Galaxy wide, you become a pariah to every other House. You cannot leave because you can't fight on a Heighliner and everyone else would constantly fight you so using WMD against humans instantly locks you down on whatever planets you're on at that moment until you're systematically exterminated

2) It's explicitly said to be unpredictable. Sometimes a lasgun shield intersection only takes out the people around it, sometimes it resonates to atomic level. You could never guarantee your weapon would work right in the moment

No one seems to be giving a shit about rules. Harkonen for example uses emperor's soldiers. Just use mercenaries to nuke your enemies

Just shoot until it works. I am mostly talking about city size shields which you can laser from orbit or ground armies

I have a question about the general setting, how did Humans colonise planets before Arrakis and the spice on it was discovered? Was Humanity much more technologically advanced in the past? What's stopping Humans at the time of Dune's start from achieving that technology again?
>>
>>219499295
>Was Humanity much more technologically advanced in the past?
Pretty much. Before spice travel humanity relied on computers and AI to do long distance calculations. After the the Butlerian Jihad they were more or less system-locked until spice travel was implemented-

Considering that humanity was heading towards and extinction event, I can see why they chose revolt over subjugation to the machines. Herbert took inspiration from Erewhon when creating the setting for Dune, and the following quote from that novel summarizes the setting well:

"about four hundred years previously, the state of mechanical knowledge was far beyond our own, and was advancing with prodigious rapidity, until one of the most learned professors of hypothetics wrote an extraordinary book (from which I propose to give extracts later on), proving that the machines were ultimately destined to supplant the race of man, and to become instinct with a vitality as different from, and superior to, that of animals, as animal to vegetable life. So convincing was his reasoning, or unreasoning, to this effect, that he carried the country with him and they made a clean sweep of all machinery that had not been in use for more than two hundred and seventy-one years (which period was arrived at after a series of compromises), and strictly forbade all further improvements and inventions"
