On the other hand, my main issue with VLC was that it took AGES to run the first time you ran it after a reboot, something about checking plugins each time. They fixed it now though. It's not 1999 anymore. Back then, I had to manually configure memory so that videos can play without stuttering. At that time, sure, your choice of video player made a difference. Today's hardware is overkill for playing videos, with most problems stemming from shitty proprietry codecs with built in DRM. Your choice of video player now boils down to your personal preferences and philosophy.
