it really does seem like there is no one left in hollywood who knows how to make a good movie. like an actual good movie, not a 6 or 7 out of 10.
>>
>>219503473
This was great WTF are you on about.
Its a great movie.
Lighthearted about a serious topic, good editing and flashbacks make sense even know they are out of order. They also dont impede the story at all.
Its a wholesome broship AYYY movie.
>>
I loved it
not many kinos being made that feel like a real celebration of life

So exactly what anon said, some bullshit 6/10 except to retards like yourself
>>
the timing of the astrophage showing up during the extremely limited course of human history is a contrivance that is hard to ignore

No it is a solid well made 8-9.10 movie.
Fun, entertaining, good story etc. All the things good movies should be.
Go and watch your artfag shit and huff your own farts you pleb
>>
>>219504354
Yeah or you're a fucking retard, which is far more likely than a Lord&Miller directed movie about an Andy Weir book being an 8 or 9/10.
>>
>>219504253
No it's not, it's just chance. Life itself on this planet is a "contrivance" if you wanna be retarded about it. Plus there's parts in the book where Grace theorizes that astrophage as a life form might be connected to both life on Earth, on Erid and Tau-Ceti E.
>>
>>219504424

>>
>>219504722
we dont know if life in general is or is not a contrivance
if the astrophage kills all life on the planet in something like 100, or even 1000 years, then its an astonishing contrivance that it happens to show up during human history even if it is correlated with life (in general) on earth
not to mention the fact that the astrophage is also a novel source of energy that empowers humanity to save itself from it
youre not wrong to say it is just chance but the odds are so cosmologically, vanishingly low that it is by definition a contrivance to make the story happen in the first place
>>

You’re not wrong. I’d argue the best films of last year capped out at like an 8/10. Its probably a mix of them playing it safe to try not to offend anybody and filmmakers aiming their sites lower at a general audience that is getting stupider by the TikTok.

you found this thread cringe, I found it fun that's why I'm happier than you.
>>
okay, so since this thread actually got replies I will elaborate.
what I liked
>the general production design and visual effects, including rocky
>gosling's performance
>all of the sci fi stuff
>grace's general character arc
what I didn't like
>the pacing. the first act fucking dragged. the last act fucking draaaaaager. it reminded me of many anime movies here there aren't any acts it's just random shit happening for 2 hours. I'm going to get called a retard for this but I don't care. I'm the general audience. you need to make movies for me.
>all of the characters other than grace. they tried to speed run character and relationship work for the other characters and it didn't work and I didn't care. every second that dour german chick was on screen was torture. and then to top it off they have her sing a fucking harry styles song to try to make you think she's deep or whatever. well it didn't work and I fucking hate harry styles.
>in general there were too many breaks to play fucking full pop songs. enough with that shit. I was never watching jurassic park and thinking "oh gosh this is good but I wish they would stop and play an elton john songs or something over a montage."
>the ending was too happy. everyone got what they wanted and no one had to sacrifice anything.
>>
>>219512676
>the movie gets reeeeeeally fucking sappy towards the end. they were so desperate to tug on your heart strings that it started to feel artificial. I understand that you need to set up emotional stakes (especially for female audience members since they don't care about sci fi) but it was really too much. for fucks sake there were TWO rocky death fake outs. like come oooooon.
>too many fucking flashbacks. I did not give a single shit about german lady and her diverse friends. they are not the interesting part of the movie. grace problem solving in space and building a relationship with a rock monster is the interesting part of the movie.
>>
>>219504253

Grace literally sacrifices his return journey to Earth to save Rocky and the Eridians

>>219513250

The flashbacks have a genuine purpose in the book, that was sort of lost in the film

Why did the movie have to be so goofy?
>>
>>219513505
>Grace literally sacrifices his return journey to Earth
no he doesn't. rocky says that they can send him back and then grace says "I'll think about it" and it's implied that he's perfectly content teaching eridian children and that in fact he might be happier on eridia than he was on earth.
>>
>>219513389
the movie weirdly didn't hold your hand with any of the science stuff but did hold your hand with the emotional stuff. it was like watching two different movies.
>>
Imagine during that scene in Interstellar, that tars and coop go quipping and retorting each other while the tension is at its highest.
That is what this movie is and it made the entire thing mediocre. First Man is better. Interstellar is better. This is mid and lebbit as FUCK
>>
>>219513739
>no he doesn't
Well, he does, he sacrifices his return journey. He's going home, then he turns around to save Rocky, knowing he can't go home anymore. It's a direct contrast to when he was on Earth and refused to go on the ship, because he was a coward and "had nobody worth dieing for". Then he's grown as a person, is no longer a coward, and has something to die for.

That he gets to teach on Erid is hardly him getting what he wanted, but it's bittersweet.
The book does it better. He has to live on Erid in double gravity for 16 years eating meat harvested from himself, before they fix the Hail Mary for his return journey.

NTA, but this movie was just more pure faggotry from people who can't conceive of a better future anymore. It isn't sci-fi without hope for a better future, that is its entire purpose as a genre, to inspire wonder at the possibilities many years from now. Instead of interstellar diplomacy, green space princesses in lycra or humanity fuck yeah moments, we get a limp-dick loser teacher being sent into space by brownoids to team up with an ugly alien and un-fuck space. I honestly don't know what they were thinking, the entire premise is just not that great. There's no wonder or upbeat feelings to be had here.

when they had the scene that Gosling inferred that the two rings with 8 balls were oxygen, I was intrigued. I was thinking “wow, that’s cool. This movie will be about two aliens, trying to figure out a problem while only being able to communicate through the universal language of math”

and then in a 5 minute montage, Gosling has a full automatic translator that somehow fucking works without the computer being around. And oh what a coincidence Rocky understands English perfectly. Never mind how fucking long it would take an English speaker and a Japanese speaker, these fuckers figured out interstellar communication in a fucking montage

completely took me out, desu. The movie was a bit too corny for me anyway so I probably wouldn’t have particularly liked it anyways but still. They had an interesting concept on their hands and they botched it

there is no evidence in the book that the astrophage is a bioweapon
even if it were it doesn't really change how unlikely it is to appear in the solar system during the events of human history unless it was specifically sent to our system as a direct consequence of human exploration into space or other signals humans have sent like radio waves
still a huge ass pull and there are many great science fiction stories that don't demand accepting absurdly unlikely coincedences
>>
>>219522662
also, the astrophage would be one of the worst bioweapons of all time since it also happens to be a novel source of energy that targets can use to find and destroy the civilization that sent it

In the book Grace just says that Rocky concentrates hard and remembers everything. And since it uses echolocation, is very good at distinguishing between sounds, like human words.

Grace worked out he used sound to see when Rocky couldnt see different markings on the tape measure.
>>
>>219534666
Actually yes, they did, faggot. Indian tribes were not some singular civilisation and were not peaceful in the slightest; they were constantly warring with each other for territory, pillaging other tribes and taking slaves. Colonials worked with certain tribes to offer them extra territory, goods, peace treaties and support. Of course certain colonial higher ups went back on those treaties eventually, but for a time there was peace and cooperation.
>>
only dumb people thought the ending was happy ending. If Gosling come backs to the earth time already has passed for decades, easy 30 or 40 years, all his relatives already have passed away. >>
>>219504253
isn't it mind blowing that nearly every single movie ever made is also set during a time when human beings are on earth?
>>
>>219548625
cheese is made from human skin cells?
>>
>>219548684
it isn't an ass pull. you could every single aspect of reality is an ass pull in that case.

>imagine a rock in space being just far enough from the sun that doesn't get too hot or too cold for humans to survive. what an ass pull!

do you know the odds that the moon would be the perfect size and distance away from the earth to be able to create an eclipse? how is something happening ann ass pull simply because it happens when humans are alive to witness? are you legit retarded?
>>
>>219548684
that's not what an "ass pull" is you fucking dullard
>>
>>219548774
it is made from spoiled cow milk mixed with bacteria fter days of chunking it together and draining off the excess liquid. it is weird and gross. don't be obtuse. you eat so much weird and gross shit it doesn't even register to you because you aren't the one actually making it. cloned cells are just that, cells. I am sure you have bitten skin inside your cheek, eaten boogers, sucked spit out of woman's mouth, juice out of her twat etc etc. get over it
>>
>>219504354
>>219503620
I liked the movie and you are retarded
>Fun, entertaining, good story etc. All the things good movies should be
These are all things MOVIES should be. This is the bare minimum. This is what every movie at least attempted to be until the slopbuster Marvel era. The movie is a 7 out of 10 if you are inclined to be extremely generous. The idea that this could be a near perfect 9/10 “great movie” is something that could only be concieved by someone born into the Marvel era and knows nothing but slop
>>
>>219548907
you're clearly just here to argue. have a nice day.

This. Holy shit I couldn't wait until that scene was over and we were back on space.

That's like the definition of harvesting cells anon. They harvested cells from him them grew more in a dish somewhere

Carl is fine. Goose and rocky are great. Every other character either sucks or exists to say one line. It is obvious they cut about an hour or so of earth shit that actually fleshes them out like in the book.
Curious to see if they release an extended version with all the cut shit

First act was a struggle to get through...
>can't decide if it's "wacky" or "dire" with Gosling wriggling around like a worm and then finding frozen corpses
>running around looking like a filthy hobo with that beard making hobo messes all over the ship
>interminable middle school flashback scene where (surprise!) the class whiz is LE BLACK GIRL
>poor, homely Ryan Gosling has no gf or wife...right
>this project needs African delegates to weigh in, lmfao
>soundtrack was pretty fucking nerve wracking, with weird synths and LE MOTOWN MUSIC
>zany shopping trip with gentle giant black american gummint man
>Gosling talked and acted like H. John Benjamin on Bob's Burgers for some reason

After that it finds its groove, especially after Rock Lobster shows up and it actually becomes one of those rare movies where the second half is way better than the first. Don't walk out, lol.

If you have to consciously "turn off your brain" then it's not a good movie.
A good movie can get away with inconsistencies, because it's so enjoyable you don't care about them.
It's the "just turn off your brain" idiots that are facilitating all these mediocre movies.
>>

Way to miss to point of my post, you retard.
>>
>>219550182
nice projection dipshit
>>
>>219548718
not really since most movies are about human drama which wouldnt exist without humans there to start it
>>219548796
>how is something happening ann ass pull simply because it happens when humans are alive to witness?
its very unlikely a life ending solar disease that does its work in about 100 years shows up just when humans are starting to do space exploration
life on earth has been around for 3.5 billion years
human life on earth for only about 300,000, or 0.0085% of all life on earth
if the astrophage shows up even 100 years earlier the story can't happen
if the astrophage isn't also an exotic source of energy the story can't happen
>>219549596
>>you mean hobbits are uniqely resistant to the corrupting influence of the one ring and it just so happnes that a hobbit ends up the ring bearer in the fellowship?
hobbits got involved because they are innately good burglars and later proved themselves resistant to the ring which is how they got involved in the fellowship. they are also not the only creatures that show resistance like tom bombadil, aragorn, faramir, and galadriel. we're not sure if all hobbits are naturally resistant
>>Wait Sarah Connor's son grows up to lead the rebellion? The same Satah Connor the terminator is trying to kill? And Skynet has a time machine?
this is a chain of cause and effect that makes sense, end to end, as far as time travel stories go. someone is likely to lead the rebellion against the machines, and its likely that if the machines have a time machine they will use it to go back in time to kill the person who they know becomes the leader because it has already happened for them
>>The Romans just so happened to crucify the ONLY son of God?
the romans didn't decide to randomly execute exactly one person during the entire duration of the roman empire for no reason, the empire commonly executed people as punishment for crimes. the son of god created a political problem for the jews so they had him killed

hope this helps
>>
>>219550237
Since when implying that I'm a KHV is projecting? Do you even know the meaning of the words you use?
>>
>>219550251
So the astrophage isn't an asspull then. Just like the singular son of god being born during the time of the romans, the hobbits being resistant to corruption or Sarah connor having a son. A plot point isn't an asspull because it is unlikely. Especially when said unlikely scenario is the crux of the plot. Might as well get pissed Sauron was coming back when Aragorn was alive.
