If they could grow enough crops on a space station to feed all of humanity, what was stopping them from building massive greenhouses on Earth protected from the blight or whatever it was?

Yeah a physicist explained it well. It wouldn't quite be like the tsunamis we have on Earth.

This but actually. Precolumbian mesoamericans were really good agriculturalists. The Incans developed terraced farming to make good use of scarce land and water, the Aztecs built raft farms called chinampas, and North American tribes planted squash, corn, and beans in clusters because the three crops, when planted in conjunction, would help each other grow and replenish the soil in the process.
>>
>>219507376
Did you watch the movie? The crops they were still able to grow were genetically modified, but the blight was starting to affect them also. They knew that eventually nothing would grow.

Using corn as a staple crop is actually retarded because it causes a form of malnutrition called pellagra unless it's been treated with an alkaline substance. The Mesoamericans figured this out quick using lime water which is called nixtamalization that also makes it easier to be processed into corn flour. Corn tortillas, tamales etc are made with nixtamalized corn flour and you can use them as a staple food without issues, but if you just eat corn on the cob or polenta as your staple food you eventually start shitting yourself, getting dementia and fucked up peeling skin

>>219536161
this is a misleading map.
"calorie" production or import is meaningless, because most agriculture in the world is used to feed livestock, especially in europe.
its not meant for human consumption and cant be switched easily. crops for animals and crops for humans have very little overlap.

europe hasnt been food secure for almost 200 years, but there hasnt been a major famine because the entire world WANTS to sell their shit there. and europe grows cash crops to export to other nations.

the west relies on open trade and supply chains just as much as africa, in case of a major disruption, both would have famines. theres like 4 countries in the world that still produce enough food for their domestic markets (and they're usually dirt poor because they dont have another choice)

being able to produce all your own shit doesnt make a country safe or rich, on the contrary, if europe was required to grow their own food, it would be way too expensive

>Yes, it is technically possible to produce food from oil (petroleum hydrocarbons) when no viable agricultural or biological alternatives exist, primarily through microbial fermentation to create single-cell protein (SCP) or, in more limited ways, synthetic fats. This approach has historical precedents and some modern relevance in extreme scenarios like global catastrophes that disrupt sunlight-dependent agriculture (e.g., nuclear winter or massive volcanic events).

It's better to just never admit it. Years ago, I confessed to my wife that I was molested by a relative when I was younger. She was shocked and asked how old I was when it happened. I told her I was 31. She asked, "Aren't you 31 now? How do you molest a 31 year old man?" I told her you just have to get him really drunk last week in the back of her hot cousin's PT cruiser at a family barbecue.

The funniest part is that they go to Giant Tsunami planet first. Like, they're saying "oh it's just right here, so close and we're getting a signal so it must be good!" Any one of them should have said that planet will NEVER be habitable, the other astronaut would have just arrived, they would doom humanity trying to do anything there since it's over a century per day on that planet, and they're wasting a shit ton of time even going there. They say it's nearby and the other planets will take months to get to, but dude they waste 21 years going to that piece of shit and get one of their guys killed for what was an obviously terrible choice. They could have gone to Hugh Mann's planet and he'd still be happy and sane. The black guy wouldn't have spent decades jerking off alone. The white guy wouldn't have died. They'd have like half a dozen astronauts to go on to Love world and save humanity
