What season did this go to asshole mode? I haven't watched it in like 15 years but I'm feeling nostalgic and don't want to download the nu-simpsons ごみ.
>>
2-6 is golden age. 7-11 the cracks start to show but still pretty damn good. 11 it just gradually goes from decent to okay to bad. It doesn't ever get truly terrible until after the movie. The movie premiered after Season 18. That's my cutoff.

Pick any random episode between seasons 2-11 and it'll be good. And before anyone bitches about me omitting S1, S1 is good but it's not golden age.

cheers that sounds like a good exit point desu
I vividly recall getting the movie on dvd as a kid and watching it a bunch of times with my mom growing up

The movie isn't perfect, but it's the best finale we're ever going to get.
>>
>>219519654
S10 is the turning point and it has a handful of great episodes, but also a lot of some of the worst episodes in the entire series run so far.

we're watching it right now from the beginning
>>
>>219519948
uhhhhhh ACKTUYALLY seasons 2-9 are the golden age
>>
>>219519654
1-4 is the Golden Age, 5-8 is the silver age, 9-12 is the first bronze age, 13-32 is the shit age, 33-present is the second bronze age.
>>
>>219519654
The 90s seasons, after 2000 it's almost another show
>>
>>219520138
the simpsons movie is better than the episodes coming out around it because they got a bunch of the old writers back to do it. there's basically nothing worth watching after the movie
>>
>>219519654
7
>>219519948
>>219523072
There's a few memorable episodes after but 7 is when the show goes to shit
7th season is shit
>>
>>219519654
Season 11 is the last season with more good and/or decent episodes to bad ones. Season 12 has about a third of it being like that and from there it just keeps shrinking until its one or two episodes each season until around season 20 or so when the movie came out.
>>
>>219524319
season 7 is 50% golden age. seems like there were more lisa episodes than usual (which are always unwatchable), plus the awful george bush and lalapalooza episoeds.
>>
>>219525757
>awful george bush episode
what are you smoking
>>
>>219519948
What's the last episode that is considered classic? I remember the maude t shirt cannon but only a couple of episodes after.

This guy's post is louder than World War 2. Janny, go see what the rhubarb is.

Season 7 is generally decent but if you're watching up to that point you can definitely see the quality is starting to slide. 8 is really uneven but has enough good episodes to make it worth sitting through. 9 is when the show officially disappears up its own ass. Homer becomes the main character and completes his metamorphosis into a malicious, selfish oaf known by fans as "Jerkass Homer", and his family is reduced to fodder for his antics.
>>
>>219523072
Season 9 has holdover episodes at the start of the run. If you can put aside the standard whining about the Principal and the Pauper “ruining the show’s continuity” (by lampshading the fact that it never had much of one), then you’ll find those first few episodes about as enjoyable as the rest of season 8, joke and tone wise.

Then the quality of the comedy nosedives, and not matter what anyone can say, it never recovered.
>>
i wouldnt waste my time going past 13, I mean personally I wouldn't go even close to that far because even golden age simpsons isnt as strong as people say but 13 is fine stopping point if you're a fan
>>
Anything up to the point where they switched from 4:3 to HD is decent. After that point it's a completely different show.

>What season did this go to asshole mode?

Season 11 is where the wheels fall off. 12 is actually a little better, I'd say its watchable through about season 15, beyond that its a hollowed out soulless husk.

I'd watch through season 10 knowing that season 1 and 2 are still figuring things out and after season 7 quality starts to go down. Beyond that I'm not sure its worth your time although there are still good episodes every now and then up till the Obama administration.

3 through 7 > 8 > 2 > 9 > 10 > 1

The long-term effects of the movie are really emblematic of the show as a whole. Despite the box office success it drew, the double-edged sword of it was that it set out to be as palpable as possible. Most of the OG writers were involved, but they bitched out on including much supporting cast cause test-audiences didn't know them, that's why there's a lot of new characters. One of their early drafts involved Mr Burns causing everything, and killing him off from the show

It's a perfectly cromulent opinion. Also, Sneed.

7 was tipping
9 was pretty much end of quiescence
>>
>>219523072
Nah, rewatching the series right now and it definitely starts to lose it's spark post-Who shot Mr Burns.
>>
The show was firmly rooted in the zeitgeist of late80s and early90s. The further it is removed from that period, the less authentic energy remains.
Because of that later on (post 1999) it simply loses its identity altogether since none of it makes sense anymore. It was created with a certain time period in mind and it doesn't really work when that period has passed.
>>
>>219523303
Season 5 alone is golden age.
>>
>>219519654
After season 11, I'd say the next 10 seasons are so are outright bad, from season 23-26 onwards it gets a little better with some hits and misses(more of the latter) with some alright episodes and some very awful ones. Don't fall for the Disney shill trap claiming that the recent seasons have gotten better because it's no better than what it was 10 years ago.

"Homer's Enemy" is the end of golden age for me, i'll never understand the love for this episode. "WHAT IF A REAL PERSON CAME TO SPRINGFIELD" - i don't give a fuck what would've happen, always hated this type of meta episode. Simpsons should never be meta, same goes for Bart's "you can't critisize a free tv show" rant in Itchie and Scrathy ep.

Season 9, with the couple of exceptions, is nowhere near the golden era episodes in quality.
>>
I once described an episode as being from "the time where Apu and the mexican bee were still there"
Find out when they left and you'll have the answer
>>
S1 - S2 - Still figuring things out but the writing was sharp.
S3 - S7 - Golden age
S8 - Cracks starting to show but still very good overall
S9 - S10 - Problems becoming more evident. Probably the last seasons I'd consider taking to a desert island.
S11 - S14 - Beginning of the zombie age, although these seasons retain some slight holdover from earlier seasons, you will still get a few laughs per episode.
S15 - S32 - Complete zombie shit.
S33+ - Complete shit that tries way too hard to be touching and sentimental, a minority of zoomers like it for some reason.

Bumblebee Man had an episode about him literally last season.
>>
Nice to know that everyone seems to generally agree within a tolerance of one season
>>
>>219519654
When it strayed from realism, which was Season 3 iirc.
